So I’ve been in the country nearly 3 weeks now, was surprised when in the post today came my green card! Which I believed would take a lot longer, however still no SSN as of yet. Didn’t realise how needed this was to do anything here, had tried to get my Texas driving license but no can do without SSN. I’m attending a job fair next week and hope to have by then, generally how long do these things take? I know it’s a bit like asking how long is a piece of string, but from some searching through old posts it seems usually around 2 weeks?

If you entered the USA on an immigrant visa and had checked the box to get a SSN assigned, be aware that doesn't always work.
You can go in person to your local SS office and apply in person, should take 2 weeks to come in the mail after that.

My son arrived on his immigrant visa on July 12th, having asked on his DS-260 for an SSN to be issued, and he went to the social security office on July 24th. The lady there was able to check his file online and told him that his number had been issued on July 18th and should arrive imminently, it arrived in the post the next day. No sign of his plastic green card yet though.

In recent months the advice has been to wait a minimum of 7 days to apply - otherwise a wait of 4-6 weeks seems to be normal.
You could go along to the social security office but they just don't seem to be interested in even looking until you have waited a minimum of 4 weeks.
You can't get a Texas driver's license until you can prove 30 days of residency.

Applied for my SSN at the office in Hoboken, NJ on the Thursday. I had received my number in the mail the following Tuesday. I don't think there are any guaranteed time scales.

Quick update, I had ticked the box for it to be automatically applied for once I arrived. Popped into local Social Security office today, they couldn’t find me anywhere in the system, but applied there and then and was told should have my card in 4/5 business days. All rather painless, was in and out around an hour, so hopefully have the card end of next week.
