The nice lady in an Illinois DMV showed me the screen as they cross referenced my SSN against the appropriate records, so needing to see the actual card is completely superfluous.

wow took her going to a bank with it for her to get caught out? Thats crazy, its funny what happens when ur in smallish towns, u never know about the people around ya lol biggest thing here right now in the suburbs is the fact that several meth labs have been found in homes in pretty normal (non ghetto neighbourhoods), think its becoming quite an epidemic lol.

But really, what happens when some1 has 2 ssns and its not for valid (like spousal abuse or what not) reasons, especially if it is the error of SS?

I seem to remember I applied for my Work Permit, which took about 6 weeks, then I went down to the Social Security Administration building and applied for my SSN & card there. It took about 10 days for it to come through.

well getting ur license in indy when ur not a us citizen really does suck, you have to show ur ss card, status in the us (greencard, work permit, certain visas etc) a secondary piece of id or info (like a bank statement) and something with ur address, but can be one of the other things u show if it has ur addrss on it. They have to verify the immigration documentation at a central verification area, before they will give you, your actual license or permit etc (you get a piece of paper thats valid for 60days, but not allowed to be used for identification purposes). That takes forever, and you have to go through it apparently every time. To get a state id here, you dont need a social security number, but you do need the id and immigration documentation.

Except when an adopted child is assigned a second SSN, the SSNs are cross referred in the system and the person can use whichever one they want.

Being assigned more than one SSN doesn't happen as much now that things are computerized as when cards and numbers were given out in Social Security offices.

Sounds similar to IL apart from the central verification area thing.
One thing I can say having been to 3 DMV's is shop around - one i went to was staffed by idiots, one was pretty good and the third had excellent staff - there was quite a difference I can tell you.

I think lots of people have found this to be the case.

If it's not part of the FAQs then it should be.

Not that anybody ever seems to read them...

I know...weird ain't it...but apparently the person was using the money to buy food at McD, Wendys, Subway etc, get the food and change, which would be used for buying drugs...only needed the quarters to do laundry I think...the mind boggles *lol*

Took loads of attempts ... I thought they were making paper planes out of my applications (they kept saying they didn't receive my application then applications, sort of funny because I went to a downtown office, got the form, filled it in and handed it to them). I took the hint and went out to a Social Security office and in the burbs. They said I should complain and said they would definitely not lose my handed in application. They didn't. They sent a social security card that added an "s" to my surname. They asked me if I was not sure how I spelt my surname. I insisted I did ... They said they would check the form I filled in to see if I added an "s". After checking, they said they would be sending me a new social security card with my surname correctly spelt. It arrived ... a few weeks later. Took maybe 3 months to get a proper social security card. Welcome to big government. It pretty much sucks.

Wow that is sucky and i thought i got it bad LOL. I had to go through the manual verification due to the fact i was not in the save system But i was not explained any of this when i was at the ss office. But i waited and waited and waited and it ultimately turned out that my application some how never made it to be verified in chicago (since indianapolis doesnt do the verification anymore). So hadda wait longer, but thanks to a helpful person it could have definitely been worse, considering the people i spoke to at the ss office were not at all helpful. On a good note i was in the system when i presented them with my greencard to get a card without the work auth legend on it.

No, not two numbers, it was the same. I'd just forgotten it. The first one was issued on the spot. I filled in the form, waited for a couple of hours, went up and sat at a desk, the person did some stuff, handed me a piece of paper and told me not to loose it as this was the number and I would have to wait a bit before the card came. Didn't seem strange until I started to read things here.
