Hi we are moving over beginning of January to Orange County (Ca), with our 3 children.
I really want them to start term on the right day. Do we (the parents) have to have our ss number before we can enroll them?
Thanks

I have never been asked to provide my SSN to enroll my kids in school. I did have to provide their SSN's and birth certificates. Have you checked the schools web site?

We rang the school and they said to bring b/c and proof of address, and just turn up to enroll them, but knowing my lick when we get there we will need more lol.

You do not need a SSN, you do need usually to be resident.

Thanks. I was wondering if I can get the numbers for all of us if I bring the relevant paperwork before we come out permanently (I am coming again in December), to save some time when we arrive?
I guess we need proof of address which we wouldn't have then.
Hmmm, trying to work out the best way to do it with minimum disruption for the children.

You will have to provide some proof of your residence - lease agreement, utility bill, etc. They won't let you enroll without it as school attendance is based on your address.
Do you know which city in Orange County you will be living in?

The biggy will be your children's immunization records. Here are the CA regs for immunizations for children entering CA schools or child care centers.
http://eziz.org/assets/docs/IMM-1080.pdf
If your kids do not have some of the requirements, it is usually pretty easy to go to the local Health Dept and get the needed immunizations. Some schools also require eye/hearing test and proof of a recent dental visit/screen. Again, this can all be taken care of at the Health Dept, if needed.
Hope this helps!

It's state dependent but normally the requirement is that they be receiving an education ... not quite the same thing.

True, children don't have to be in school to be deemed to be receiving education, but no state can turn children away from the school if they are resident in the school district. Across the US there is an absolute right to free education (at the point of delivery) for children in state schools through to age 18.

We enrolled our oldest this summer in OC. No SSN required, just proof of residence I'm the school district.

The school very likely has a website which will have a list of documents required on it, and possibly some PDFs of the forms you'll need to fill out.

It will be in Misison Viejo.
I have their 'red books' for vaccinations they have had here. Am getting their medical notes too.
Our dentist said he has never provided patient notes for taking abroad and understood that a new dentist just starts from scratch (laziness on his part?!), and our optician just gave me the current prescriptions we use.

you wont need a SS # to enroll you children in school.
Your new dentist will start from scratch regardless of wether you bring previous records with you, they will want to do their own exam etc to ensure everything is correct and to their standards - a trip to the dentist here is a totally different experience (a good different).
