I know there are loads of homosexuals in this world and I even have some friends who are gay and if thats the wierd lifestyle they choose thats their decision, but keep it behind closed doors.
Same sex unions or marriages are disgracefull in my opinion and I certainly don't want my little girl thinking that boy with boy or girl with girl is in any way acceptable.

Whilst I do not agree in same sex marriages, I do believe that same sex couples should be able to live together and be happy.

If they want to get married let them, but in some folks eyes like mine and a few others so it seems, it will never be recognised in our eyes as being the same as a traditional marriage, and no law or court in the land will ever make us except that.

I have gay friends that I adore and have been a hypercite and gone to a gay weddding, but they knew my thoughts as I theirs and we respect each others opinions.

Having been taught marriage was a union between a man and a woman, I find it difficult to accept the concept of 'gay marriage'. For many people a marriage is a holy matrimony. The most they should expect is a civil union, anything more is just the appeasing of a very vocal minority.

I agree again, but we/us... a large majority will never recognisee it as I said before, with the terminology marriage as the name for this union, so for me I care not what they call it, they are NOT and never will be married in my eyes.

There's an idea here that goes along the lines of removing government from the marriage business all together and having everyone who wants it (from a governmental POV) on a civil partnership type ticket.

Then if you want "holy matrimony" (whatever that means) it's between you and your god or you and your church and will have no bearing on your interaction with government.

It'd certainly be more Constitutional.

the concept of marriage etc has evolved over time - you dont see dowry payments etc much any more (at least not in the more developmed countries), and sex before marriage is less of an issue etc - so things have changed already. I dont see why they cant change a bit more and it be acceptable for same sex etc.

Yes - I would be very much in favo(u)r of that.

(and, at the same time, perhaps we could also get rid of the tax exempt status enjoyed by various religions ...)

Oh Crap ... I agree with FB?????????????

Both a justice of the peace/civil officiant and a man/woman of the "cloth" can perform marriage ceremonies by decree of the state. If you are religious and want to be married in a religious ceremony which includes both civil recognition and religious recognition, then you are married by a man/woman of the cloth. If you're not religious, you have a plain civil ceremony without the pomp and circumstances of a religious ceremony.

Both ceremonies have the same legal consequences. That being the case, why the hell are religious people sticking their noses into civil unions. If their religion does not condone this marriage and/or union, its officiant does not perform the ceremony.

IMO today's controversy about same sex marriages/unions is the same as it was back in my youth about inter-racial and/or inter-religious marriages.

Are the religious telling me that my marriage is illegal because I married at an age where I could no longer procreate and because I did not get married in a church?

I would tell these people to get a life and live it. What two people do between themselves is of no business of theirs. Same Sex couples are only asking for the right to share the same legal benefits that opposite sex couples. Their love for each other, their commitment to each other are just as deep and binding as for heterosexual couples.

So you twits, open your minds to the differences in people and stop thinking that only your way is the right way.
