Do they still give SSN's out at the POE for IR-1 visas or must you apply at a Social security office?

I have never heard of anyone who received a SSN at a POE. Social security and
immigration are two different branches of the government, and I think you will have
to go to the SS office to get a number. alvena I am not a lawyer and this is not
legal advice.

I entered IR-1 in December, 2000 and had to apply separately for my SSN at the local
SSN office. My card arrived in the mail about a week later. Make certain that the
Immigration official who stamps your passport at the POE also writes in your A#. Not
having that can cause delays in gettin a SSN.

OK thanks. I only ask cause my brother's wife came through on some entertainer's visa (before she was married) and got a SSN at POE...this was about 3 years ago or so.
