Default Social Security number stuff.

Just a quickie - as I understand it, when I get into the US on a K-1 Visa then marry, I apply for a work authorisation, and the whole process of that can take circa 3 months (with variations, of course). And I'm guessing that part of that includes getting a Social Security number with it? If not, how do I go about getting one - and can I get one in advance of this authorisation? I think I need one to get a full state driving license and to get insurance, and ideally I'd like to have that sorted before I'm able to work.

I think you have to apply in personm to your local SS Office... take all your docmentation with you and pray you get a nice person who understands what you need. I haven't gone through it yet with my fiance, but that it what I have heard on these boards. I believe you can get the SSN even before you are married, but it may be easier if you have a marriage license to show them you are "legal".

Okay, thanks... I guess I had my wires completely crossed on that one. Thanks for pointing me at the right door.

As soon as you get into the USA go to a SS Office with your I-94 and apply. I
got mine 2 weeks later, in JAX,FL.

From what I have read on here in the past it is better getting the SSN BEFORE you marry. Apparently some have waited to get it till after they married & really had a problem getting one.

Hi

I waited to get a ssn until after we married.I went to my local ss office and picked up a form that was in a holder just inside the door they also had some inside on a shelf,I took it home filled it out and went back the next day as they opened, i sat for 45 mins waiting, when i was called over all i had to show was my Visa (but take everything just in case) it took 5 mins and i was out,the ssn arrived 1 week later. I applied for a none working ssn and when it arrived it had " valid for work only with INS Authorization".
You do need a ssn for a driving license and also to be put on your spouses bank details.

good luck all

I would definitely wait a couple weeks (if possible) to give it time for
your information to get put in the INS computers. I have read about people
being turned away at the Social Security office because when they did a
search, the person's name wasn't in the system yet.

My wife went about 3 weeks after she got here (before we married) and had no
trouble getting her card. She had no temporary EAD and only had to show her
passport with her I-94. Then after we got married we went back and again had
no trouble getting her name changed on the card. This was in Royal Oak,
Michigan by the way.

Hi All!

You can apply for an SSN as a K-1 as soon as you get off the boat. You
need to go into an SSA office with a completed form SS-5, birth certificate
(still say office screwed up not asking for it), passport and unexpired I-94
showing entry as a K-1. You need to do this within the 76th day after
entry or you need the one year EAD. Once, the SSN has been issued and you
get married you can try to get the SSN record corrected to show the married
name and have card issued in the married name. This might not be possible
until the you have the EAD card, since by that time the 76th day has come.
Getting an SSN or replacement card depends on how fast INS gets your status
in the system or gets back to SSA with the verification if it isn't.

Form SS-5:

Field Office Locator:

RM 00203.110 Evidence of Age for an SSN Card

3. Foreign-Born Applicant Applies for an Original SSN Card

If a foreign-born person has the foreign birth certificate (BC) in his/her
possession or can easily obtain
a copy, it must be submitted. Be aware that if the person is foreign-born, a
BC may not exist, may not
have been recorded shortly after birth, or the probative value of the
document may not be high. In
these situations, accept alternative evidence of age in order of probative
value. The alternative
evidence of age may be less than a year old (e.g., an INS document).

Take care,

Mike

Hi All!

SSA doesn't turn people away. Just a manual verification (G-845) needs to be
sent to INS, that can take a month or more.

Take care,

Mike
