You need to apply for an EAD (Employment Authorization Document) by filing form I-765 with the BCIS. Once you have this you can get an SSN from the SSA.

If your children will not be working they do not need an EAD, if you wish to include them on your tax return (to get the deductions) you can get an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) from the IRS for them.

For details of the ITIN try here:

2. Aliens Who Require an EAD From INS Authorizing Employment

The following lists nonimmigrants, by alien classification, who are
authorized to work with authorization from INS. Employment authorization
must be shown on an EAD.

K-3 - Spouse of U.S. Citizen (provision of law: 274a.12(a) (6))

You all need:

Form SS-5

http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html

The parent applying an behalf of a child needs to provide proof of his or
her ID. However, they is no minimum age for a child to be able to sign
his or her own application. Both parent's SSNs need to be provided on the
child's application, unless they don't have SSNs. Only people age 18 and
older applying for an original SSN and card must apply in person at an SSA

Wheren't they thinking of changing the "child presence requirement" to 14 or something similar? I take it that they haven't done it yet - I remember signing a petition expressing my feelings against it I thought?

Any news Michael?

Hi All,

Proposed rule lowers it to age 12. The comments period ended yesterday.
You can say bye bye to getting a driver's license as a valid nonwork reason
for needing an SSN if it goes into effect.

You can read the rule change at:
