You will need proof of your status in the USA and your original work authorization. I am not sure if you really need your birth certificate. My alien husband did not need his. He was OK with his passport, visa, and work authorization.

To my knowledge, you will need to show original documents at the social security office when you go in person to apply.

However, I would still advise the OP to get another certified copy as he is bound to need it at some point in the future.

Re: social security number
It's basically saying they don't need your birth certificate. Bring a photocopy anyway, just in case, but chances are you won't need to show it.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. LOL

Re: social security number
You will never ever have an original. You will only have a certified and/or registered copy of the BC or any document provided by a government agency, i.e. marriage certificate, birth certificate. The original stays with the government and they in turn will give you a certified copy which has the filing marks, etc. on it.
In this case you are talking about a xerox copy ... that won't do it. You need the original copy from the government agency or as MDYoung and Meauxna and Rene said, bring your passport. The original one in your possession that you used to enter the country and your driver's license which is also photo ID and has your birth date on it.
