I think that varies by state, don't notice it as a issue in Maine, but someone mentioned they needed the plates in MA to get that insurance or it'd be the normal insurance. Saying that, the whole insurance game changed a couple years ago in MA so it might have changed since then.

I moved a 1967 car from the UK to the US in 2008 (to Illinois). Was pretty painless, and just had to show the woman at the DMV my UK title and the customs clearance (make sure you get something from where it clears) when registering it here.
