What benefits would a credit card have for emigrants besides helping to establish a credit history?

Citibank does have a 'global client' type account which you can get before moving here but the fees are quite high if you are paying them yourself. Best thing to do is ask your local branch people about it.

It might help. Citibank was helpful to me when I moved from Canada to the US in 1993. I had a Citibank card in Canada, so I called the Canadian customer service number. They sent me an application for an American Citi card, which I completed and sent back to Canada (at their instruction). Citi Canada forwarded it to Citi USA, and a few weeks later an American Citibank card arrived in the mail. I still have the card and still use it. Try calling Citi customer service in the UK and see if they can assist you.

Sort of.

One of the 'problems' with Citibank is that not all Citibanks are the same. Citibank USA is a different company than say Citibank Hong Kong, and when you transfer money between the two they sometimes treat them as separate bank entities (rather than say an intra-bank transfer between accounts). This can be a bit annoying.

If you pay a bit and get a Citibank Private Account (or more importantly, have your employer pay for it) than you get the benefit of a 'personal' account representative who can help walk things through for you. My rep has done things like 'waive all wire fees' and done a wire (after hours) to get some money across the planet a bit faster. Much nicer than dealing with your basic bank teller at your local branch.
