Shasta Lake / Redding CA
Does anyone know anything about these two communities?
I know the basics, they're in Northern CA and I've checked out the city-data page but does anyone have personal experience of them and what they're like to live in for a family of four with two kids five and three.

I've not personally been, but people I work with say that it's well worth a visit. Living there maywell be something different. You are well into cannabis growing badlands. Also "Breaking Bad" type meth lab country.

It's actually a rather beautiful area of CA.

Agreed it is a very nice place, genuine real folk and the oldie world feel to it, boating fishing, walking/hiking, caves the lot spectacular, national forests ...I personally don't like the modern concrete sub divisions and man made parks, plastic restaurants and boring same ol same wine bars affects of other areas, nice for a day out but not to live in..... in CA if you want character and safety with some history, you have found it!

It's kind if my fear that it might be a little Boonie- ish? Right now we 're in a small town in MO and its kind of unfriendly, very cliquey and very religious, especially the school mums. I am worried that we would be just swapping one small town nightmare for another?

Compared to many other areas in California, Redding schools are ranked fairly decently with most ranked above average and a few ranked at or near the the top.

Like others, I think it is a beautiful area but have only been through it a couple of times.

Oh wow, that website gives a much better view than greatschools.org makes me feel somewhat better if a move does happen for us.
I also assuming that cost of living up there is not going to astronomical like say San Fran and the likes.

Yep I got that impression from Zillow too. So it's kind of comparable to where we are now

From a housing point of view, a half million dollar home in the bay area is a starter home in not a great area or a very long commute where as in Redding it appears to be at the high end of the market.

Thing is, I'm a city girl at heart! :-D but I'd do virtually anything to get out of the mid west
