On my first stint here in the late 80's the cross bronx expressway used to remind me of the Mad Max films- burnt out and stripped cars littering the roadside.
Even times square was a little hairy then..who'd have thought looking at it now.
Funny reading the Boston shout outs- In '89 I lived in Swampscott next to Lynn and didn't notice anything too bad- on the other hand I did take a wrong turn into south Boston and the IRA wall murals back then were pretty intimidating
