FWIW My lady co-owns her own business in the DC area, she manages to pull in about $ 75K pa. ( AND gets a tax refund too ! S type business, but nice when u can earn that & get a tax refund)

They feel that they would do well to hire anyone to do her job as 'cheap' as her.

Good luck with the job hunting

You might encourage her to check with her accountant...a tax refund is an interest-free loan to the US Gov't. Remember, it's *your* money they're holding; a refund often indicates that one overpaid thru the year.

Does that mean we can ask them to not spend my share of the tax revenue on stuff I disagree with ? The next cruise missile fired at some target will bear the legend.. NOT paid for by Doctor Scrumpy

The content within British CVs depends on the industry that the person is working in and the industry he/she is tageting.

Having worked in HR in the UK in different industries, I've seen all kinds of information stated in CVs, some of which would not seen in, for example, finance/banking CVs.

It may be true in the US that the content of resumes depends on the industry.

That's why it's so important to do research before submitting a resume for a job if you're not from the UK.

On the agencies issue here, it's amazing how many companies who take your money actually vet you to see if you're worthy of giving it to them! Or they ask you to pay for not getting a service!

Examples
1. Multiple insurance agencies who will not insure people in certain areas.
2. Agencies who charge you to register with them before they offer any kind of service

I'm sure other people have far better examples than me.

Ah well - it's the differences that make us who we are...

In the case of 1. they don't have agents to deal with claims in all areas, so they quite properly won't accept would-be clients in areas where they can't help in the event of a claim.

In the case of 2. I am not sure what you are talking about, I have never been asked for an up-front fee for registering for anything.

Same here, no one ever asked any payments, but I don't know why...even I registered to more than 8 staffing agency, not even one have any 'temp' or 'assignments' for me...even I do not demand about the payment. May be when they see my resume...she is not American and put it in the thrash. May be yes, and may be not....but who knows whats going on actually.

To go through a letting or real estate agency here in NJ, many (all?) require a "one-time" registration fee - typically $100 - $250 in order to show you any apartments or houses.

Similarly, many of the coaching companies (I am a soccer coach) charge $125 per year registration fee to kids / families, to make the kids eligible for the camps and training sessions they provide. Easy money for those at the top-end of the market.

With the car insurance, 90% of US companies won't insure in NJ (I couldn't find a single one on-line - you type in your zip-code and they tell you no coverage is offered in your area, or go to a dropdown list that doesn't include NJ). Of the few that do, I couln't find anyone who woul cover me on an international license, until someone in this forum recommended a company to me who would.

Not sure how I would have got through without that help, which I is why I think it a shame when the forum is hijacked for personal word battles. (But hey - I'm new to this...)

Glad you mentioned this- too many people think its good to get big tax refunds (and Americans use the IRS as a savings bank!). You only get a refund if you overpay your tax throughout the year, and giving Uncle Sam an interest free loan of your money is not very smart. If you get a big refund then alter your withholding (claim a dependent or two) and keep more money each month out of your paycheck.
My coworkers can't seem to grasp this- they even alter their withholdings around about July time to pay more tax so they can get that big fat check the following Spring

Well,I have worked on the Cruise ships for the past 5 years on a C1 D visa for an american company.I thought that this would be advantage when I made the move from Britain to get married. It has taken several letters and almost 9 months to get a work permit. My first 3 interviews have not gone well as they seem to be preoccupied with the time I have not worked despite the fact that I explain to them that I was not able to until I had permission.Hopefully there will be a company soon who can understand this and atleast allow me a second interview.I am not helped by the fact that I have no contacts here and they say that 73% of all jobs are through an aquaintance. So here's my advice ,get out there and network and best of luck!

Hi there

Whereabouts have you been working on cruise ships, and in what capacity?

Im a dealer and am looking to move to florida with my wife soon.

Maybe a 6 month contract, only problem is my wife isnt a dealer, she works as a casino waitress......so if we can get on one together that'd be great; otherwise ill find work on a daily gambling ship.

cheers
good luck too

Lee

Hi Lee,
I've worked all over and with Radisson,Cunard and Carnival as a shop manager.I found that Carnival was the best for making sure that couples are kept together and as you are married they will try to provide you with a married cabin.I also think that they are best for onboard rules and perks for staff although they are getting tougher. They have home ports in Miami,Tampa,Port Canaveral and fort lauderdale. If I was you I would definitely contact them.I had a great time on their ships.
best of luck!
