It's not currently an issue but I believe the UK is planning to introduce an ESTA like system in the next year or two which will probably mean that having a current UK passport for dual citizens will be much more important...

I could imagine that if the UK implements an ESTA type process, which I think is coming, then there may also be a rule on using a British passport if you have one. But as of today, there is no such rule.

I think Australia has always had that rule as well, certainly since 1989 when we first visited there. They have border control when you leave where you show the passport that has allowed you to be in the country, either your Australian passport or other passport with valid visa. Our daughter’s partner is Australian American and he shows his US passport at the airline desk when flying to the USA from Australia and then his Australian passport at the border control exit check.

The primary reason they request your foreign passport is to ensure your identity is consistent across both sets of documents, e.g. your name in your US passport matches your British passport. HMPO won’t issue your British passport if any of your biographical details differ from that on your other passports.

There is no legal requirement to do so however you will be treated as a US citizen if you present a US passport so if your intention is to do anything other than is permitted as a visitor then travelling on your British passport is a wise move.

I've only used my US passport to enter the UK since I became a US citizen 14 years ago. Don't see the need to carry multiple passports on trips, unless there is a specific requirement to do so.

I didn't ask about other 'non-official' stuff like copies of statements, utility bills, etc. I didn't debate things as a different approach was eventually used.

To be clear, it was not the UK financial folks who had any issues, it was the NY state notaries. The UK folks were asking for these notarized copies. The notaries would not notarize copies of "official documents", in my case passport and driving license. They did say it was a state-by-state thing.

I don’t think that’s the issue, they have the same restriction in CT as NY, the issue is that they are not qualified to authenticate that a document is real, so they can’t certify a copy. I have got around that by having them notarize my certification that the copies are true and original. I have a stamp I have used and then they notarize me signing the stamp/statement.

Yes, the key phrase is “I certify this document is a true copy of the original document†so you have to supply the original and the copy to the notary but only send the notarized copy to whoever requires it. That is what various UK financial institutions told me to do, and I had no issues at either end.

I really do not understand what the problem is. Just take a photo copy of the main page showing your photo and send it with your application.

Two things going on here. One is a passport application which does not need a notarized copy, the other is a range of other processes such as verifying identify for UK institutions that do require certified/notarized copies,

Agreed. This thread is re UK PP renewal/application…so please let’s keep it on topic.
