I have a relative who got married abroad to a man living in the U.S. In April 2000 she got her conditional green card. It will expire in April 2002. Since then they filed taxes jointly, and she's on his insurance plan. Now he has sent her to live with her other family members and refuses to let her come home. How can she change her temporary green card into a permanent green card? What proof does she have to supply to show that the marriage was genuine. Now she is in a different state and does not have access to these papers, and her husband is not cooperating. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

She should get an attorney. If she cannot afford an attorney, there is probably
someone in her area who does some pro bono work. She can contact the local bar
association to see if there are any hungry attorneys in the area, or contact the
local spouse abuse center. Also, some of the INS offices list pro bono or cheap
attorney services at the bottom of their "about us" link on the INS website. Alvena
