No worries, I just wanted to highlight that you're getting more than most people could expect to get if they're relocating as opposed to being on an expat deal (like you/Mr Weeze) where your main salary is paid in a one country (UK) and you get allowances for living in a different country (US).

We came as part of an intracompany transfer but as soon as we hit the ground in USA, was part of the US company business unit. We are not expats on an expat package. Hubby is British but through marriage, is a permanent resident on his own green card. This option gave us more future flexibility on hubby's own career.

Thus said, all the expat perks such as various payments for food and flight allowances back 'home' were not even discussed.

Hubby went for a larger pay packet with negotiations on receiving the following, which we did.

Relocation consisting of one container
Pre-move trip
$2000 cash to settle in (which is taxable, by the way)
3 months serviced apartment
3 months rental car
Tax professional for 2 years

That is about it. Many folks come over on less assistance.

Our health cover is a part of his US-based package. His is covered 100% but mine is a slight cost. All companies differ on what an employee will pay toward health cover.

Part of his salary/job negotiations was an upfront requirement for 5 weeks vacation from the get go. Plus the 8 public holidays, we are the same level as he had in the UK.

It sounds like you are moving within the same company so I'm sure they'll offer something. See if you can work with it, and if not, be ready to negotiate what you need.

decide in haste, repent at leisure!

If they are a big company, they should have a fairly standard relo package. Get that information on the table, then review in your time. Ask for what you need. Saying "This is what I need." is a good direct way to communicate what's important to you.

Hard to remember what we got but here is some of it:

Pre-relocation trip over (1 week) for all 3 of us
Flights over (cattle class)
Hotel stay night before we left
6 months rent/utilities/furniture rental
Shipping of belongings (think it was a 40 ft container?) plus air freight so that some of our stuff would arrive sooner (took 2 weeks)
1 month car hire
Flights home every year while on Visa's
Hubby had company car in UK but they don't do that in US so salary was increased
We had a redemption fee with our UK mortgage so got a one off payment to cover that plus purchase of white goods etc - they called it a signing on bonus
Visas and trip to London embassy paid for
Little things like paying for the cost of our US drivers licences
While we were on Visas we had a repatriation package - flights, shipping, lump sum to cover white goods etc but now we have green cards that has gone
You will want to get it in writing if they will sponsor and pay for green cards
1st and last year tax preparation
Kept his 5 weeks vacation time
Also important to get items grossed up that are taxable

Basically they paid for anything that we would not have had to pay for had we stayed in the UK, hubby was adamant we would not be a penny out of pocket - well he is a Scotsman after all.....

I think OP needs to clarify whether it's a transfer or a new employer. Transfers often get recompensed for everything, is a new employer going to go for that?

I thought that they made that perfectly clear in their second post:

So did I, but others are saying it's a transfer.

If he's helping to set up, he's going to be pretty senior rather than phleb at the rungs though, so nothing wrong with asking for more, with reasons to state why they are reasonable and looking at this as a transfer.

It is a large global company after all.

Ask for EVERYTHING - the worst they can do is say no!

The first months in temporary accommodation while waiting for your belonging to get here by ship from UK are stressful, as are the first few months in permanent rented accommodation - there will be security deposits to pay, big ones generally if you have no US credit history... and your first 2 years of tax returns could be complicated... so have them pay for as much of this as you can...

Good luck!

I agree no harm in asking.

We got $15k to cover flights, removals, and a few other bits and bobs (there wasn't much left over after the first two).

My husband works for a company that owns a bunch of hotels, so he also got a hotel room for the first two months till the rest of us arrived.

They actually gave it as a loan, which they forgave at $5k per year, so that he didn't just use them as a way to get to the US then dump them.
