Relocation to Chicago Area from UK

Hi
I'm exploring an opportunity to relocate to the Chicago area. The employment opportunity is Whiting Indiana but as a family we would like to live close enough to Chicago to enjoy the city. However I'd prefer not to have a daily commute greater than 45 minutes. From web based research Orland Park seems to tick our boxes in terms of location. We'd also like good schooling as we have a 7 year old and 5 year old. Does anybody have any experience of Orland Park or have any suggestions for alternative locations that have good access to Chicago downtown and a reasonable daily commute to Whiting and also suit a young family with good schooling ? I'm also interested in people's thoughts/feelings under the Trump administration ? We have come across some people in the UK who have lived in the US for a long time but could no longer stand it under Trump and so have returned.
Thanks

You might get something nice even closer to Whiting but Oak Brook, Lemont, Oak Lawn have very nice middle class areas.
Amenities, shopping, schools, restaurants, walks, parks.

Being closer to the city wouldn't attract me.

25 years and Trump is the reason I'm heading back. And very soon.

Why does Trump bother you so much, enough to leave? He'll be gone before long.

Trump really doesn't change my day to day life a great deal.

However, I would have certainly left the UK if Corbyn got in.

I'd be very wary about being too close to South Chicago.

:goodpost: My wife was born in Oak Lawn. Not a place she would want to live anymore.

It's much improved in the past 10 years. Some very nice areas.

Since no one has asked - is this a transfer with your current employer or a prospective new one?

I recently moved to Chicago via an intercompany transfer. I explored quite a few neighborhoods and settle in the Oak Park area. Oak Park reminds me of Muswell Hill and as a North Londoner that was appealing to me. I have enjoyed Oak Park for the past 6 months, however I am also considering moving a little further out to Forest Park or to Evanston.

Thanks to all for the posts. In reply to the question re inter company transfer. This is a new opportunity with a company I’ve never worked for previously.

Thanks

So presumably the employer is looking at an H1B.

You're aware that you'll be applying in April for an October start, and that you will be participating in the lottery as the category is usually oversubscribed?

'I'm exploring an opportunity to relocate to the Chicago area'

How far along are you?
Has the company made you an offer/discussed a visa?

⠀‹Also that the mother of his children will need to be his wife to get anything other than the most basic visa [B-1/2, "domestic partner") to live in the US, and that even as his wife she'll only get an H-4 won't be able to work, at all unless she qualifies independently for her own work visa, or until the employer applies for green cards for them all.
