Default Registering to vote

I'm a Green Card holder living in North Carolina. This question just popped
into my head while I was reading the state drivers handbook.

I'm going to go get my drivers license shortly. While I'm there, they're
going to ask me to register to vote. Now, AFAIK, I can't vote until I'm
naturalized. However, where's the law with regard to registering myself as
affiliated to a particular party?

Thanks

Paul

I am not aware of any except for an outdated one from the 1950s.
Just don't join the communist party or you'll never get naturalized. hehe

Such hypocritical law.

Is there a separate mechanism for registering to vote and registering affiliation? I would assume that you can only do the latter if you are legally able to do the former?

You are right! You don't have that privilege yet to vote until you become a
US citizen.
If you decide to vote because somebody made a mistake in letting you do it,
you would violate INA 212(a)(10)(D) and INA 237(a)(6).

There's no law that would force you to be affiliated to a particular party.
When you become a US citizen, you have the option not to vote even though it
is your duty and responsibility to do so as a good citizen.

No. Political parties are private organizations

False alarm, folks. The guy there knew what he was doing, and didn't ask me.

Paul
When you register to vote you can register with a party or leave the box blank. It is a federal offense to register to vote if you are not a citizen.
