Out of interest, what dare I ask is the clientele? Those who can't afford Merry Old Blighty or got lost en route to Disney down the road. |

Redwood City, games = Sony. There's also the George Lucas place in SF.

Surely you jest, ha ha? I am somewhat disappointed. I have enviously looked at the place with my face pressed up against the window as we have driven by....

I think I went with my roomate and our respective dates. Maybe he was trying to make me feel at home at the time. I just remember sitting there thinking how shite it all was and how crap the food was. |

But yeah, it's a good little hub all over that area, so the bounce effect is certainly a plus. |

The food was shite, if I remember correctly it was little Cornish game hens, served on metal platters and no cutlery, you were supposed to rip them apart with your hands so as to totally immerse yourself in the medieval experience. The joust was very staged and choreographed. don't hold back on my account. I suppose one could try Burger King on horseback for a similar experience.

gimme a shout later today. Had a mate move to Midway in Chicago, but the thought of moving all that way for a place that will no doubt go poof in the night is pretty scary and sooner of later they'll have to, I mean they haven't turned a profit since the last century, so not exactly a good run  |
Re: Redwood City, CA?
shudder... Midway is also in the WORST spot for commuting.

Yeah, that's always a worry, salary might be shit for that neck of the woods, actually is probably won't be hot so it's something I'm looking into.
There's a few studios out there which is a draw and I've a mate that lives in San Fran. The benefits aren't to shabby, but then they usually aren't in the games industry...thing it, it's California...no offense, but that was way, way, way down the list of states I was looking at, on par with Austin, Texas. The peninsula has a range of un-developed hills on one side, and a massive Bay on the other, making for a pleasant setting. The weather is near-perfect. You can head up to the wine country for a nice weekend; drive up or down highway 1 for amazing natural beauty; head to Tahoe for skiing in winter; head to Yosemite or Kings Canyon for beauty; Death Valley for excitement :) ; LA for a dose of consumerism and Disney; to Menodocino for a weekend getaway; Carmel for the same (but at higher cost); and so on ... I just got back from a biz trip to Philadelphia area ... it was HOT, humid; flat; massive thunderstorms piling through (and flights delayed); lousy service in the hotel; could not get a decent espresso drink to save my life. Last time I was there, they were in the middle of a massive snow storm and I could not get to my destination even; power outages due to weather; flight delays; and the same terrible service in the hotels. But it was green (due to rain) and it was cheap (housing). Can't think of much else to recommend it ... |
Re: Redwood City, CA?
Oh, I wouldn't mind a few places in north CA, it's got a good hub and I"ve a few friends out there.
The major cons, well I'm hardly an art director nor a coder, so salary just realistically won't do it and the idea of having to live in a pokey one bedroom flat in a shit hole doesn't appeal to me...neither is the commute in the areas of interest. It's also miles away from the missus family and even further from blighty. I'm also not really into the hot states, which is why CA is down the list with Texas. Can't compare to Phili, because that's just a shit hole on par with Slough.

Why is CA way down on the list? I mean, if you really don't see CA as a draw, then why would you even consider it, given the well-documented expense? Personally, I love CA and would not live anywhere else (though Austin, Tx is high on my list of 'possible alternatives', given that it is very un-Texas!). Other than the high cost of housing, I can't think of any reason NOT to want to be here - unless you have an irrational fear of 'liberals'! Everyone I know just works hard and enjoys life.

Bob, I don't know where in MA you are, but if you compare Redwood City with Boston on weather.com you might be surprised - I only looked for June, july, Aug & Sept, but RWC is cooler than Boston on average during each of these months.
