I usually use the B1 G1 free from CVS but havnt seen any in a while and recently the cards have been expiring before I can finish using them.

I have never checked into using my cell phone as I assume its too costly.

I pay $5 a month on a AT&T PAYG phone and get 250 minutes, I used to have a contract phone for years but it so much cheaper to have a PAYG ( thats another story)

I mostly use onesuite.com which I think is about 1.8¢/min to a UK landline if you call a local number (and they seem to be everywhere), or 2.8¢/ min if you call the 800 number.

There are a few cheaper ways to call the UK, but I put $10 twice a year on the card (takes 2 minutes on line) so there is a very limited room for me to save enough to make moving to another provider worth the hassle.

BTW you can call the onesuite exchange from your cell phone, and only use "US minutes", which is often what I do because my (minimum) cell phone plan gives me massively more minutes than I use.

I have a unlimited plan for text and calls within the US with 2GB of data and then pay an extra $5.00 which allows me to call the UK for up to 250 mins and rolls over which I did not know until I just checked my rate plan

Total monthly payment is $70

If you go via somewhere like callingmart.com for your GoPhone refill, you'll avoid paying taxes AND get a 10% discount (see their facebook page for latest code each month). I pay $54 this way rather than $64 ($59.99 plus tax) each month.

Just to address the question directly though, I use sipgate.co.uk in conjunction with either a soft VOIP client (softphone) on my iPhone or through my Cisco VOIP phone on my desk. Works perfectly. I have a UK number assigned to it so friends & family can call me for the price of a local UK call (ie, free).

Cost is minimal. The iPhone app is $6.99. I think I added a £10 refill to my sipgate account. The account allows one UK number.

Call rates: United Kingdom landline: 1.19p/min mobiles: 9.90 p/min
Or you can buy 1000 minutes for £5.90.

There's no expiry on the number or any compulsion to top up every month; just add money as you need.

I've used Nobelcom for many years. Very reliable, very cheap, never expires. I last put $50 on it maybe two years ago, and I still have a healthy balance left. This is from a landline here, I don't have a cellphone.

I'm using localphone (picked it up from someone here, thanks!). I call a number local to me (so free on my call plan) and I pay 1c per minute to localphone to call the UK.

I'm also paying them 99c per month to rent a UK number, so friends/family in the UK call that at their normal charge, it's forwarded through to my cellphone and I pay 0.5c to localphone to receive that call.

It generally works very well, includes apps so I can call over wifi and avoid call plan charges altogether, and call quality is usually ok.

I use Skype too, but it has its downsides compared to old fashioned phone calls - it has to be generally arranged in advance so people are in front of their computer, it assumes both parties have the technology and know how (not so easy with elderly relatives) and also assumes the other party has an internet connection that supports Skype.
