Re: Proposed increase in non immigrant visa fees
A consipiracy theorist might make the connection between ESTA implementation, increase in requirement for B visas, increase in fees....
I buy the rationale and agree with all of it except the K visa. The reason it take more resources to process is because it has to comply with immigrant processing, but they (incorrectly, according to some) require the same work to take place again in the AOS application.
K-1 Fiances pay for the same thing two times (including medical). It's the biggest scam in the system.

Least it's quick...talking similar money in the US and by that point, you've probably paid to be put through the system multiple times already.
I could kind of see it if it actually sped things up, but it really doesn't and there's no accountability really.
Wonder how many more people look for help in the fees now though.

US immigration is supposed to be cost-neutral to the taxpayer; the fees are supposed to cover the cost of the visa. (U.S. law requires the Department to attempt to recover the cost of processing non-immigrant visas through the collection of the application fees.)
Even if others are asking for fee waivers, surely *you* don't want to subsidize the cost of some other shmoe's visa?
"Because of ongoing process and security enhancements, the $131 fee set on January 1, 2008 is lower than the current, actual cost of processing non-immigrant visas."
"The proposed fees accurately reflect the processing costs incurred and regulations require full cost recovery through fees. "
