My cousin in Spain couldn't believe how long it takes and how expensive it is to get a UK passport. In Spain, it costs 20 Euros and takes about two hours.

The wait is necessary to justify the cost.

There's a lot of truth in that. Make people wait because it's "oh-so-important heavyweight document".

Do you know how much British voice actors are these days? That Gecko has raised labor costs!

The $15 post is because they fedex overnight the passports to you.
I just got my new one last month and my sons too.
Oh well, I'm sure they'll go up again by the time I renew again in 10 years. Or maybe I'll be back in UK Isn't it cheaper there for passports?

Ha, my daughter's passport got issued the day before the price reduction

British passport renewal is a ripoff. $90 for the US, $253 for the British!

Won't it go back up again when the fee is next adjusted, as the pound is falling against the dollar?

It still doesn't explain why the price is so much higher than in the U.K.

Put differently, if British citizens overseas received a fair deal, the cost of a passport would be USD135, service standard would be 10 days and the "helpline" wouldn't be outsourced to a premium rate phone number.

Have British passport services been outsourced? Is that why the price can be lowered?

I must admit I was a little shocked at how much it was. Imagine if you were getting them for a family, it would almost be worth not bothering and staying in the US!
