Critters. I forgot to mention critters. The second leading cause of outages here are opossums, racoons and birds flying into substations and taking out part of the grid.

Like that episode in CSI Las Vegas about the rat. Got fried chewing on a wire.
USA has written about those little guys mucking up things: "Suicide Squirrels driving Utilities nuts" http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/...quirrels_N.htm Not sure what is more weird--a squirrel zapping power or 'leaves on the tracks' slowing trains (that one always makes me laugh). |

My apartment in DC hasn't had a power cut for about 15 years, but all the lines are buried. My house out in the country, however, has several a year. We have overhead lines and trees trees trees.
It sucks all the worse because we are on an electric well for our water, so a loss of power also means no h20. So when a big storm is forecast here we fill up the bath so we can flush the loo with a bucket. Also fill up jugs for making cups of tea etc. In a way it's fun for a while, making tea on the wood stove, heating up soup etc...... bacon and eggs for supper made on the woodstove! |

Sure we have them here but to be honest we had more power cuts in the UK. Our road was the only one in the village with overhead cables. One weekend just before Christmas we were without power for 3 days. :(

We did buy a generator a couple of years ago, just before Katrina hit. The company we bought it from were about to ship it when the hurricane hit & they were swamped with orders. Naturally, orders from that area came before ours so 3 months later, no genny & we got a refund instead. Still don't have one. I hadn't thought about the well pump though. yikes! And the giant water system we have in because our water stinks off sh!t :( |
