Are you serious? yes it was square was no more than 5" square though!

True. Postal rates were adjusted, and non-standard configurations, like square cards, require extra. But if you put the square card in a rectangular envelope you can get around that.

Rates are set because machines can be used. Machines have standard measurements. What doesn't fit in the machine has to be hand-canceled. Therefore, charge more for the special service.

That sounds sensible, except... if you look on the USPS site and find the definition of "letter" it sets a minimum size of 5"x5" for square envelopes (vs 3.5"x5" for regular ones), which suggests that they are processed by machine after all.

Lucky you. I get these at work all the time and always refuse them. With the new(ish) postal charges by envelope size, the mail is usually only 6p out. To add £1 on top is ridiculous.
