It is true. Drive the NJ Turnpike. My girls and I can identify the town we are driving pass by the odors ... dirty socks, armpits, crotch, farts.
Western NJ is lovely as are some of the shoretowns. The only reason I go to and through NJ is to either visit family in Freehold or to get to another state.

PS The hoards you are getting are from Staten Island and Brooklyn. We Westchesterites wouldn't think of moving to NJ.
