Posh Do???

I'm off to a posh works dinner  I have to wear a cocktail dress (aarrgghh) or something that you'd wear to a evening do at a wedding?? That'll be jeans and a nice top then
Help!!! I have no idea! Where do I even buy such things?

I dont know where you live but there are about 3 posh frock rental places in the mall where I live - they thrive because of proms and such. Why dont you look in yellow pages in the posh frocks for tartin yourself up section

A department store eg. Nordstrom's, Macy's, Lord & Taylor.

As a last resort...a store where they sell wedding dresses & prom dresses but they might be OTT.

As it's late Spring I would go for a shorter (knee length) dress...I'd only wear a long one at around Christmastime.

He he.....are you going to get a manicure and hair-do for the occasion too LOL! ;)

Marshall's and Ross often have nice evening wear at reasonable prices (though more so in the months leading up to Christmas - next time plan ahead ;)

But surely this is one of those occasions where 'the little black dress' (+/- pearls :D ) will do just perfectly?

Have fun! :) [better not too much though, seeing it's 'work'...]

Cheers ladies and Patrick, just nipped into Ross, bought one for $27.00!!!, woo hoo, fits me like a glove, my two year old says I look like a princess, aww :D, means I can now go spend $400 on some shoes.. ;)

http://www.dresses.com/evening1.html Nos. 15, 26, 28 and 30 are my personal faves, even though I'd be constantly wiping the floor with all of them as I'm damn short LOL ... or do like me ... I'm completely clothed by J.C. Penney! LOL They seem to have everything you need. I hate wearing skirts and dresses, though. Am sitting here in my workout clothes after sweating my arse off (actually, that would have been nice) at a kickboxing class this evening, much more comfy in that kind of thing, so I know how you feel!

Found this too: http://www3.shopping.com/xDN-Clothin...dresses~V-grid

I would personally steer clear of any "satin" ones... they look like long lingerie. :p

NO FAKE TANS!!!! Don't do it please... You will look like you've been tango'd... They all have a slight orange tinge or that tide mark from not washing properly look... LOL

Go buy some bronzing powder and a big puff or brush. Lightly apply to your back, shoulders and chest. Add a bit of sparkle if you like... It will look great.

The other option is a tanning salon. If you choose the fast tanning type. Go for the stand up cubicle ones, as the lay on type can make you stripy looking.

This is from a woman who knows... LOL

Oh and just to reassure you... There will be loads of other women with white skin there too... With family and work, no time to sunbathe.... LOL

Just go have fun....

To be honest... The leather skinned women will actually be jealous of your skin..... :D

I know a few people who have had spray tans.....and they all came out looking rather orange....even the palms of their hands :scared: .....I would recomend going on a tanning bed instead.

Ditto ditto ditto!!! Please don't do it! I've never had one but know plenty of people who have. They've all been self-conscious the whole time.

Re: Posh Do???

I had a spray tan called 'Mystic Tan', I think they're all over the country, they do have a website too... I was scared of the orange look, but it did look really good, and you can ask for the lightest if you're really, really white now!!

You'll have a blast if it's anything like the east coast work do I went to at christmas! The cocktails out here are nothing like the ones back home, they just don't believe in adding fruit juice or cream, it's pure alcohol! One or two of those and I'll guarantee you won't care where you are! Enjoy, but hope you get some nice shoes out of it!

With regards to the alchohol we've had an email sent round by the company warning everyone to take it easy or else.. can't see that happening somehow but we'll see.

Ah, well that obviously means that you have some money spare to buy more shoes with! What a bargain!

As for the email, CEO gave a speech to all employees on the morning of our do, saying if anyhting happened we wouldn't be having another one. With so much free food and drink on offer, I think most people were moderately happy, but I don't think anyone really disgraced themselves...not like the office parties back home!

Actually not .. they are a big US company (80,000 employees) and have a bloody rule for everything, you cant actually bring alcohol into the work place (or guns apparently :scared: )

When I worked for them in Spain and Italy they tried to stop wine and beer being served in the canteen - nearly had a mutiny on their hands and backed down

- anyway Woodseys driving :D

Maybe they sell the rejects down here in FL? :D

I recall being invited to a really posh do a few years ago, and couldn't find a pair of stilettos in the entire city, and no, I am not kidding!!! It has changed a lot the last three or so years, but the first years here were impossible, shoe wise....

Can you believe that I can't find a pair of espadrilles (shoes with a wedge heel and lacy ties for the ankles) anywhere... :o

I can't understand it, the 'boho' (bohemian) look is in fashion this Summer and I have one of those gypsy skirts with sequins on....yet I can't find any shoes to go with them. I don't want to wear flip-flops, yet I haven't even seen any nice leather sandals either (the sort of thing to be found on any British high street or a market in Spain, Italy, Greece etc). I can't even find any ethnic-type necklaces here either.

It's so irritating - I have some of the latest UK editions of Marie-Claire and Cosmo and all the shoes and accessories I want are featured in the mags and can be found in River Island, Debenhams, New Look, Monsoon, Accessorize and believe it or not, the Florence & Fred range in Tescos!

I can't understand it that I go into shops here like The Limited, the Gap, Express, Banana Republic and there is so much conformity with little variation from one Summer to the next?

I can empathise - I always have problems finding pretty yet comfortable summer sandals. There seem to be just 2 extremes: flimsy high-heals vs  Birkenstocks...

Believe it or not, even in NYC I can't find nice and comfortable shoes (or maybe I just don't know where to go), so ended up ordering sandals from Nordstroms.com, not cheap but at least got what I wanted.

Yes I can believe it - I'm quite close to NYC so I have looked there. The only interesting shop is Urban Outfitters but the clothes are badly made and expensive for what they are.

There are some of those large shoe stores here in NJ (I think they're called DMC or similar) and most of the shoes seem to be those elaborate OTT Italian dress shoes which look like they'd give you blisters if you wore them for more than an hour LOL!

My friend is a fit model in the NYC fashion industry (she's a 'perferct' size 8 and fits for The Limited, American Eagle, Talbots, Michael Kors, Hilfiger etc.) and even she complains about the dull styles in the shops here....

Ho hum. I'm going off to our local mall soon to see what's in Macy's and Nordstrom's.....thanks HM but the only pair of espadrilles in your link were in horrible stripes....I just want plain black and beige ideally! :p

I know everything about blisters since I don't have a car and walk a lot LOL. But I just can't bring myself to wear white socks and white sneakers with office wear...
