Default Pool Heaters...recommendations please.

The heater for the pool has died so OH is looking for a replacement...any suggestions/recommendations. This was discussed last year and some recommended air heaters...the guy at the pool store said they are not viable for the NE climate. Can't really understand that comment as now through to September...traditional pool season in the NE...the weather is about as hot and humid as Florida.

We enquired about that a few years ago...too expensive for the volume of water. I wonder why solar energy isn't used more here given the amount of sunlight all year round.

Hubby built one of those a couple of years ago and it works beautifully. We have an above ground pool, one of those EZ set ones, and the temp of the water is anywhere between 78º-82º. It was only an experiment and he really didn't think it was going to work very well but we're happy with it.

The facing of your house and roof space/other space impacts on solar heaters too. For examle, the ideal placement for the panels on our house is facing the wrong direction, neighbors house casts the shadow at the wrong time of day, trees are in the way, etc - if you put the panels on the wrong facing, you need bloody loads of them to get the same effect as perfectly positioned panels.

Or keep VERY LOW Chlorine and almost zero maintenance / other chemicals as I do with :-

Had it for 3 years and the testimonials could all have been written by me. To say the water is CLEAR is an understatement. It's spooky how CLEAR it is, like almost 100% you can see from one end of the pool to the other with no particles.

After pricing the various pool heaters...my husband decided to try to fix it himself. He stripped it down...cleaned it and now it's working.

Thank you everyone for your advice.
