"One of them was carrying a black handgun - it looked like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on top of him and unloaded five shots into him."

Why, if they were on top of him, did they feel it necessary to fire 5 bullets into him?

Admitting to being "totally distraught", he went on: "He half-tripped, was half-pushed to the floor.

"The policeman nearest to me had the black automatic pistol in his left hand, he held it down to the guy and unloaded five shots into him."

All speculation. He may or may not have been involved. The police may have had info, maybe not. All speculation. We'll probably never know the full truth.
Maybe after being repeatedly warned by the police, he went for the detonation cord on his bomb vest and that is when they decided that they had no choice but to shoot him. Again, it's more speculation I guess....

They'd have to go for head or neck shots to avoid detonating any device the bomber may have strapped to their torso.
Randomly pumping bullets into any other body area would set a device off, particularly with the instability of the compounds suspected of being used in the bombs detonated/found so far.

Sky news correspondant says that early reports are that the guy had no explosives on him, which will probably lead to more "why did they shoot him?" type questions. Source

However, to me its a fairly simple decision to make......a day after 4 attempted bombings on London, 2 weeks after 4 successful bombings, when confronted by armed police telling you to stop running away should be the last thing on your mind. Sounds like the guy is/was heavily involved in someway and hoped he could get to the train and away from police, if someone is prepared to be a suicide bomber then I guess somewhere in the mind of someone like that prison is worse than death.

Unless the Met has changed policy, you're automatically suspended and CIB called in when you shoot someone. Happened to a friend of mine. He shot someone and got arrested for manslaughter immediately.

Would you throw yourself on a guy you think has a bomb and not want to make sure he was dead......its OK for us to sit here safe and think things over....but they have seconds......

The only thing I'm questionning is why it took 5 shots?

Seriously, I'm going to be really annoyed if these cops get suspended. To reference Ray's "Democrat, Republican...." thread, would you take the chance and maybe get blown up, or do you shoot the guy and ask questions later.... mmm.... [not] a tough one.

If they need him dead...to stop what they believe to be a bomb going off.......one shot 20 shots it makes no different...dead is dead.....

It would be sad if he just ran.....but he had no reason to think that if he had nothing on him he would be held for long...they are clearing people everyday......and letting them go......

IIRC with SAS in Gib, they need to destroy the cortex at the top of the spine so a terrorist cannot even twitch after being shot and pull a cord etc.

Least he had a warning, more than the scum would give the public. Waste no tears on these people, they do not deserve to be pissed on.
