No, you're not wrong Ron, you have to clear customs at your point of
entry and not your final destination. You can normally check your bags
straight back in after clearing customs but you still have the wait
for the bags to get off the aircraft.

When I arrived at San Francisco it took me about 30 minutes to get
processed. That was from arriving at the passport desk (or whatever
you call it) to leaving with the I-551 in my passport. But, the
airport was extremely quiet. We were able to go straight to the
immigration guy with no queuing whatsoever. The wait for the bags was
actually longer.

Hi F501
well, your problem is not the international flight. They are rather speedy
here in MSP immigration and you will probably have to wait for your luggage
with a total wait of 35-40 minutes....IF they are not busy. The problem is
then now you have to get in line to have your luggage checked for your
domestic flight, and get in line again to go through security, then run to
your gate. There can be lines of 45 minutes or lines of 10 minutes
depending on how many are open for the security check before you can run to
your gate. You will either just make it or just miss it.
What airline is flying you in on the international flight?
If you miss your connecting flight, you can stay with us overnight.......my
Dutch husband makes great coffee.
Did you say when you are gonna try this olympic speed dash?
Eileen, 10 minutes from the airport in MSP
just thinking....Des Moines is only a 5 hour drive from St Paul. If you
miss your flight, maybe somebody wants to pick you up rather than wait for
the next day.

hi Eileen,
Not that we're thinking of crashing with you, but we're on our way through MSP in November and I want to clarify something you said about getting in line to recheck bags for connecting domestic flights...

Does this mean that one is not allowed to use the conveyor belt outside of customs scenario? I've never passed through your airport on an int'l flight, but I'm thinking of Houston, LA, Dallas where you collect bags after Immigration, pass Customs and heave your bags up to be resorted automagically to your connecting flight.

For the life of me, I can't remember what I did in LA last year (post 9/11) and if it was different. We've got 3 hours to make our connection & will prolly be frazzled enough as is.

Foolish.. Sorry if others have posted this.. but you HAVE to collect your
baggage at the POE.. The only time they will be forwarded is the internal
flights. I am certain that at the POE your bags will not be forwarded
automatically.. This, I hasten to add, is my experience with the trips to
the US I have made.. so you had best budget for an overnight stop too just
in case. :-( also , check with your flight people that that will be
possible, Ie travel on a later flight.. Alot of the Internet bought tickets
etc, have "restrictions" ie no changes, no refunds.. be VERY sure your
flight times will be ok.. If anything, then get an earlier UK to US flight.
Even if its 6 hours plus.. Sorry.. but I know how easy it is to run out of
time..

No, once through INS at JFK you then enter the domestic network. I was
just through JFK 12 days ago and the queue/procedure was only 15 mins.
Of course, should a couple of Jumbos arrive just before you the delay
could be much more. I made a point of remembering the questions -

INS: What's the purpose of your visit? Business or pleasure?
Me : Pleasure
INS: How long do you intend staying in USA?
Mf : 10 days
INS: Have you visited US previously?
Mg : Yes.. about 8 or 9 times
- he then looked at my passport for previous entry stamps and gave me a
quizzical look.
Mh : Its a new passport, officer
INS: Ah.. OK.. Enjoy your visit.

I'm curious as to why you are looking into booking an internal flight,
rather than tacking such onto your international journey. Normally the
domestic flight is then priced at a mileage based percentage of the
international sector which would often be significantly to your
advantage. By having separate ticketing you would also lose interlining
of baggage and the potential risk of forfeiting your subsequent flight
segment if your incoming flight is delayed.

Recently I have found keen pricing from -
