So did my daughter, but IMHO private schools here are nothing like the ones in the UK. My daughter's school had a fund raiser for a new arts wing started in Sept, over a period of 2 yrs they wanted to raise $40M. By Christmas they had raised the 40 and a family said if the school could raise another 10 they would match it. By end of Jan. they had $60M.

The school raffles were the best. At her school in the UK the raffle would be a bottle of cheap vino, a box of chocolates etc. Here it was air tickets for 4 and the use of a private villa, incl. maid and chef in the Caribbean, donated by a parent.

We just had one with a $30k car. Then a prize for the boy who sells the most tickets.

Yes we still get that from her middle school (left in 1999) and the high school (left in 2003). I believe they follow you around for the rest of your life and I'm not joking.

And average cost of an application of $30-60 per uni....and added cost, which is why a lot of people only apply to two places rather than six with UCAS in blighty, that and it's essay type questions on the application forms for each place...though depending on the school, you can get the application fee refunded if you get accepted, and with a lot of out of state schools, you have higher costs, but are able to get scholarships from your own state to study out of state because they don't have to spend the money on you instate, and also can get better student loan deals, you just have to make sure with the student loans that they don't reduce what your eligible for based on what scholarships you've gotten.

A friend of mine refused to donate to the Ivy that her son was at, saying they had paid full fees and that was enough. When their daughter applied she was refused.

that's rough...but the missus also worked at the college, in admissions while she was there and knows all the top dogs really well...and our mastercard is one of the uni, so they get points for every dollar we spend on it...

Hi Jersey, on the Palisades NJ side Regular $2.49 per gallon. On same road, but NY side $3.20, thats an amazing difference.
Calling all Expats, we should move to NJ, El cheapo Gasolino.
