Pensions - US / UK
If you have made necessary contributions in the UK during your working life to qualify for full state pension, and, you have enough credits in the US to qualify for a US pension, do you receive both?
Anyone know please?

Hi Martin
Yes,I claim both and have been for the last seven years, also my wife claims both.Make sure you notify the UK pensions at Long Benton Newcastle on Tyne six months before you reach 65 if you are male and 60 female and go to your local SS Office a couple of months before 65 so you can start getting your payments approx one month after your 65 birthday.

Mind if I ask how they pay you and what options there are for payment. I presume into a UK bank account but wondered as so many Brits live overseas if they had a better way.

Mine is direct deposited in $s, into my USA bank account. Mine is not a large pension so I get it quarterly. They claim they get the best exchange rates because they do a very large amount.

Thanks, my wife can claim next year the fact they can do the transfer saves a bit of messy around if the rate is a good one.

Do keep a record because the UK doesn't send a W2 or 1099, so you have to enter the total in the appropriate box on the 1040.

Sorry to barge in on this thread, but how do you earn enough credits to qualify for a US pension? Also, does anyone know how many years you have to work in the US before qualifying for Medicare when you retire, and does this have to be full or part time?
Thanks
Thanks

Hi, You have to have 40 quarters paid in, which amounts to 10 years. As long as they are taking the medicare payment out of your wages each week then it does not matter if you are working full or part time.Check your pay check and it will tell you if they are taking it out.Medicare pays around $1500/$1600 a month,UK pension is around $650 a month give or take.Thats if you are fully paid up in UK.
