Ouch!
Ooh! Ouchie! The pain! Nope...I haven't banged my toe or got a toothache...I just got a quote for my car insurance. OK...get this...I'm 36, no claims bonus of 9 years, never had an accident, never had a break in, never claimed, never had a drink drive conviction, professional person, full clean license for 14 years, registered nurse....and the quote? $4313 for 6 months!!!!! That hurts! Can anyone recommend anything slightly less painful?
Oh yeah...welcome to America!

Did you choose your coverage carefully? If you opt for your state's minimum coverage, it'll make your premium higher.
I'm paying more than $2k for 6 mths (and 2 cars) but your quote is way higher!

I just called International Autosource and they couldn't believe how much Safeco had quoted me. He said that no-one pays that...not even someone who owns a sports car in Manhattan! He said to shop around. Errr...duh!

Watch out about getting those car insurance quotes! Each time you get one (they check your credit report. Maybe that's one reason why the quote was astronomical), it ends up as an enquiry on your credit report so choose carefully before approaching any potential insurer.

Yes, that quote sounds a tad high (unless you are insuring a Lamorghini!).
We went with Progressive (generally one of the better / lower quotes out here) and the first 6 months was around $2,400 for 6 months on a Chevrolet Avalanche (monster truck!) and a Honda CRV. Now, after a couple of years with no accidents, it's down to about $1,400 per 6 months.
Apparently the 3 year mark is a big one (i.e. 3 years driving with no accidents) for the prive going down but, unfortunatley the 3 year mark co-incides with my daughter turning 16 (= her on the insurance as well) so I guess I'll be retired before we get this down to decent levels!!!!
I echo the advice earlier about check carefully your coverage. Insurance out here is much more complex than the UK's do-I-want-fully-comp-or-3rd-party choice. Research it a lot (lots of good stuff on-line) and get many quotes (either on-line or by phone).
Good luck,
ANdy.

The first two figures refer to bodily injury liability limits and the third figure refers to the property damage liability limit. For example, 20/40/10 means coverage up to $20,000 for each person injured in an accident, up to a maximum of $40,000 for the entire accident, and $10,000 worth of coverage for property damage. The state minimums are based on the most current information available. You should check your specific state requirements to verify these figures.
Keep in mind that the figures given in the above table only represent required minimums. In many cases it will be in your best interest to purchase coverage above and beyond the minimums (including collision and comprehensive) so that you're adequately protected. With bodily injury liability, for instance, most insurance professionals recommend that your coverage limits be $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident.
Well of course ..THEY WOULD..

Yeah... "Ouch!"
Is it possible to get a letter from your UK insurance company to forward with a review of your application.
Might be worth a shot enquiring about other discounts too... Anti Lock brakes and if the car is garaged at night etc!
Auto Theft prevention devices etc can really knock the premium down a bit I hear!
We pay $2000 P/A now, but I'm sure it will go up when I get me Mini! (My brother in law said yesterday that he finds it amusing to think I want one considering the size of the potholes in CT)
