Another reason to book the return as far in advance as possible is that airlines very often change their schedules. The further ahead the booking, the more likely is a schedule change. All of a sudden they will need to change your flight and...oh dear...none of their alternatives are convenient for you. Refund time. Worked for me. You can hope!

Good point Bob, but I'd rather not think about that one

Maybe if you phoned the airline near the time of the supposed return and say you have an emergency and can't make the flight, you could get the taxes back? They have to give you the taxes back legally if you don't fly.

We (my mum, me & DH) were all booked to go to Boston once and Mum was taken ill just before we left and didn't feel well enough to fly transatlantic. She basically just didn't turn up because at the time we weren't sure what was happening, whether she might be able to follow the next day.

Well in spite of just not showing up, she got all the taxes back, a substantial amount. In fact her travel insurance insisted the airline owed her this money and would only pay out the portion of the fare that was actually the fare itself (less about £50 access).

That £50 is all she lost out on a £405 fare. Just goes to show btw that travel insurance is worth it!

Check the fare rules as well: one-way fares may well be more flexible and get you more air miles than a cheapo round trip with restrictions.

Opinions are divided on whether to tell the airline. Some say you'll be assessed a fee on the spot so it's better to keep quiet than 'fess up.

Ryanair (and probably other low cost airlines) have that part sorted. They even tell you helpfully how to apply. Then you find out their administration fee to do so costs more than what the taxes are worth. Bar stewards. Probably not relevant here though!

So you are the US with a ticket purchased in the UK. You are not going to use the US - UK return part of the ticket. Which countries laws say the taxes have to be returned?

Well if it's a British airline, UK law I suppose.
