I spent an afternoon trying to get our existing DVD players to play UK DVD's with the various hacks from www.videohelp.com, finally gave up & bought a Philips DVP5140/37 ($55 at Walmart) I used the hack availalble at videohelp.com & it worked like a charm. It now plays US & UK DVD's with no problems.

That got me! I was looking for an online retailer called Wally World, it took a few minutes of googling to relaize you meant Walmart. :o :o :o

Go to Wally World and buy the ilo DVDR04 model player/recorder for $98. Then do a google search on the make and model and you'll find a fix for a hidden menu that converts it to a region-free player/recorder. Works well. I've had PAL region 2 discs playing on it with no problems and sent discs recorded on it to UK and they have played without any problems. |

Do you get the option of converting PAL to NTSC, or does a PAL VHS tape make a PAL DVD?
We have a rather old US TV that doesn't support PAL, the father-in-law gave it to us and at 36" we use it as our main set. I'd like to dump my VHS to DVD, and like the idea of just pushing a button to do it. Our DVD player appears to convert our region 2 PAL DVD's to an NTSC signal just fine, yet our PS2 and UK VCR give the usuall grey and scrolling image. I only have 20 or so tapes I'd want to convert. I googled but got way too many hits to spend the time evaluating them. Can anyone recommend something that will do the above?

Lets face it, VHS is dead, and a multiregion DVD can be had for less than $100. Your tapes will degrade over time too. So unless you havea huge collection of VHS stuff - i'd dump it. |
