We are supposed to be relocating to California with hubby's job but now Delaware has been thrown in as another option?!?!

Pleasanton,Cupertino,sunnyale etc.... and OMG you can get so much more for your $ there.

Delaware is generally considered pretty boring my most people, hence the Wayne's World reference. You can probably buy a much bigger property in Delaware than in Sunnyvale/Silicon Valley, and you are a bit closer to the UK from the East Coast vs. SFO (but only by about 2.5 hours, given the polar routes the planes fly). Culturally I find the East Coast a bit more tied to Europe than the West Coast--the time difference (5 v. 8) leads to slightly more of a connect from East Coast cities than from the West Coast (just an anecdotal observation). Many on the West Coast are closer tied to Asia or Latin America than they are to Europe so it seems.

Cupertino, fwiw, has very good but intense schools. Bit of white flight going on there right now.

Less than a hour to Philly or Baltimore, a little more to New York and Washington, which are the more vibrant areas on the East Coast that draw many people in. Are you going to be in Wilmington or somewhere else in Delaware?

Let's see... Delaware has no state income tax; the entire state is smoke-free; there's a terrific casino in Dover (as well as a horse/car race track); easy access to just about anywhere on the east coast; Rehoboth Beach is lovely; and the cost of housing is way lower than CA.

Living in Delaware, I would say the replies are about right.

Even my tag line is "Dela-Where - a Nowhere Close to Everywhere", but it isn't that bad.

Newark has a proper High Street and a nice University feel, being the home of the University of Delaware.

If you like walking, DE has some fairly good, if not huge, State Parks - just don't expect much in the way of elevation changes! However the Poconos aren't very far away, or more hilly regions in N. PA or New York State. Skiing resorts are around 3 hours away, but not particularly large.

If you have children, I know the schools used to not have the best reputation - I don't know if that is true now. I know some people choose to live in PA for the school system.

If you work in the northern part of DE, which most people do, you have the choice of living in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Maryland, although I know the property taxes are substantially higher in PA and even more so in NJ. I don't know what the MD situation is.

The southern part of DE is referred to as "Slower Lower" and is primarily agricultural and chicken farms, so I'm told.

I would correct ian-mstm on one point:

Delaware does have State Income Tax (around 7% from memory).

What it doesn't have, is State Sales Tax.

big house = big utility bills.
