I don't go near shops that soon either..... But I did go into the grocery store yesterday and already saw the dreaded Valentine merchandise - ugh!

Expanding the applicability of Valentine's Day to mothers if just an example of capitalism at work. Its a way of selling more cards, just like the invention of "Secretary's Day". I agree with the OP's feeling that sending a Valentine's Day card to your mum is weird, but if you tear your eyeballs out afterwards I suppose its ok.
