Oedipus Americanus
So, I was shoppiing in Borders in Redmond, WA, this afternoon, and while in line for the cash register, I was browsing the Valentine's Day card selection, and what do I find? Not one, not two, but EIGHT different varieties of Valentine's Day cards addressed to Mom!!!
I remember well the section in "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" where Terry Thomas is berating his co-passenger in a car about the US breast fixation (still correct, IMHO, despite Nipplegate), but surely this is taking it too far?

That's the point of America -- you can't take things too far!

And you can only be blackmailed if you allow someone to blackmail you.

Re: Oedipus Americanus
Not exactly an Oedipus story, but:
Last year in February we'd just bought a house (with the $$$ I got from mine in the UK) and my husband's old house was likely to go on the market after some renovation - the estate agent who dealt us during the purchase sent us a Valentine Card on 14 Feb. Presumably buttering us up to get the next bit of business in selling husband's house. We let her do it, for her cheek ! Mind you, after 6 months it's still not finally sold, so she's had to wait for her $$
