You don't say where you are from but I guessed based on where you post from (which is probably a bad idea). Your question about paying a lawyer was naive. Immigraiton doesn't work that way. Look in to H-1B working visa |
Re: obtaining a green card
Heh, if getting a green card was that easy, I'd become an immigration
lawyer. There are criteria under which you could be born in the UK and still be eligible. How do you know your DV application is being processed? They don't provide any status information and only notify winners. |

There are criteria under which you could be born in the UK and still be
eligible. How do you know your DV application is being processed? They don't provide any status information and only notify winners. the usais (united states of america immigration service) website has a facility to check on your application it is either 'processing' or 'completed' the winners are notified after april 2003 i reckon there is a 200 to 1 chance sure beats the billy connoly's lotto |

Fat chance also that that money is now lost. Normally you are not eligible as a UK citizen. Paying money to a lawyer is (as already stated by others) not the way to do it. It is a legal process, which can cost a lot of money, but that goes to INS. -- steg |

Isn't that one of those scam web sites that asks for money for entering the lottery? |

I read somewhere that even people from ineligible countries signed up there. It seems obvious they do no checking at all. I hope you didn't pay a lot of money for an entry that is free if you do it yourself. Using the site does not increase you chances at all. > it is either 'processing' or 'completed' > the winners are notified after april 2003 Can you guarantee this? How do you know they just don't set some random field in their database (if they have one) that causes the word 'completed' to appear on the page. How could this site possibly get information that the state dept or INS does not appear to give to anyone else, especially since it is know they are not in any way affiliated with the govt? > i reckon there is a 200 to 1 chance Possibly. It's not referred to as a "lottery" for nothing. I just checked my "eligibility" at the site www.usais.org and selected that I was born on in the UK as well as both parents (NI is a separate choice). The site told me I am eligible for DV which is clearly wrong. Then I went back and chose my place of birth as "United States" and it still told me I was eligible. My current guess is that anyone who chooses any set of selections on the page will be "eligible" The real eligibility requirements are here http://travel.state.gov/DV2004.html "If a person was born in a country whose natives are ineligible, but neither of his/her parents was born there or resided there at the time of the birth, such person may be able to claim nativity in one of the parents’ country of birth." They don't know any more than anybody else. They are one of these private companies that charge you money for the privilege of filling out a simple form that anybody should be able to figure out on their own. > it is either 'processing' or 'completed' That is *their* internal processing or completed status. It has *nothing* at all to do with the application once it is received at the consular enter. Maybe you should read http://travel.state- .gov/DV2004.html, especially these lines: <<< NO fee is charged to enter the annual DV program. The U.S. Government employs no outside consultants or private mail services to operate the DV program. Any intermediaries or others who offer assistance to prepare DV casework for applicants do so without the authority or consent of the U.S. Government. Use of any outside intermediary or assistance to prepare a DV entry is entirely at the applicant's discretion. A qualified entry received directly from an applicant has an equal chance of being selected by the computer at the Kentucky Consular Center as does an entry received through a paid intermediary who completes the entry for the applicant. There is no advantage to mailing early, or mailing from any particular place. Every entry received during the mail-in period will have an equal random chance of being selected within its region. However, receipt of more than one entry per person will disqualify the person from registration, regardless of the source of that entry. >>> |
Re: obtaining a green card
thank you to everyone
you have all made me feel a complete fool and i thought i was reasonably intelligent i looked at the terms and conditions of the website and lo and behold it isn'y part of the us goverment please don't anymore people confirm my stupidity and naivity j |
Re: obtaining a green card
The real point is not so much if you are a British citizen, but if you were
born in the UK. The criteria used by the DV lottery is nativity, not citizenship. So, if you were for instance born in Ireland you could apply even though you are a British citizen. As for the scam, sorry, got to pay attention in the www.wildwest L "japayne" wrote in message news:430321.1033460057@britishexpats- .com... > thank you to everyone > you have all made me feel a complete fool > and i thought i was reasonably intelligent > i looked at the terms and conditions of the website > and lo and behold it isn'y part of the us goverment > please don't anymore people confirm my stupidity and naivity > j > -- > Posted via http://britishexpats.com |
