Obamacare...
Having waited for the new legislation, then last year it didn't work, now again this year doesn't seem like it's not going to work, or not for long...
Anyone else going back to England/ Europe because they need healthcare?

Re: Obamacare...
Are you in one of those states which blocked it?

You can buy insurance through the Federal or your state's website if it has one.

But ... health coverage is changing back home too--the NHS is no longer operating quite the way many long-term expats remember it so fondly. There are threads discussing this on this in the Moving Back to the UK section of this forum. Here's one:

Re: Obamacare...
If people want the NHS to keep it's core mission of delivering care to all "free at the point of service" and be funded from general taxation they they must let the politicians know that and use their vote appropriately.

Re: Obamacare...
If the question is: "Would US health care costs compel you to move back to the UK?", well, the answer for some must be yes. But far from making the situation worse in the US, Obamacare (IMHO) is a godsend. Some people (like my wife) with pre-existing conditions (skin cancer) would never have gotten insurance without it. So I'm grateful every day for Obamacare.
I'm not sure who is actually harmed by Obamacare, which is why I don't understand the fuss. A lot of the fuss seems to be about personal freedom vs the individual mandate (rather than health care per se). We had the same arguments over seat belt laws.
In LA, you can drive in the car pool (HOV) lanes if you have a green car (e.g. electric) displaying a little green sticker/permit. I've seen bootleg stickers that look identical to the real ones except they say "I'm American and I'll drive in whatever lane I like". My guess is this person is against Obamacare, too.

IMHO the UK is so lucky to have the NHS, which is regularly assessed as one of the best systems in the world while the US system (or systems) are low down in the tables. The actuaries and the private companies will continue to whisper in UK politicians' ears about costs, savings and choice and to keep the NHS true to it's foundations will require vision and courage...unfortunately I see less and less of those qualities. But I'm approaching late middle age so nothing will ever be what it was, things seem to be in continual decline and the policemen look very young

Re: Obamacare...
I agree. Admittedly, I don't have to rely on it, and I probably have a very simplistic view of it. But from what I can gather, if you don't have medical insurance, you have to pay a tax, I assume that go's into paying the medical bills of people that get treated without insurance? And you can't be denied insurance for pre existing conditions? My father in law is a GP and thinks it's a good thing, although admittedly he does say it still needs tweaking. Health care seems to be seen as a privelage over here which is just mental. I don't consider myself a leftie liberal (although over here, I think I probably am), but surely health care is a basic human right! Anything that allows more people to be insured and get the medical care they deserve seems to be a good thing. That said, I had dealings with the NHS with my ex wife back in the UK, and as far as I'm concerned, in current day Britain, it does not work!
