Not going home for Christmas (probably)
Boo Hoo
I was chatting with my husband last night and thought it would be nice to go home to England for Christmas this year and he agreed.
I've just looked at the school calendar and sadly, I doubt that we will be going now.
They only get a week off school and in the New Year school begins again on January *2nd*
By the way.....it's called "Winter Recess" as the word Christmas is a big 'no no' around here

That's too bad. I know what you mean though. I just went home in July and could only go for 1 1/2 weeks due to work. Now my son is starting Pre-K in Sept so that will restrict our movements at Christmas too.

If its not Christmas then everybody must have winter decorations all over their house then, from Thanksgiving (whats that all about anyway) to ... oh am I allowed to say it... Christmas...... there you go.... so sue me, or shoot me
And its Father Christmas, not bleedin Santa.
Anyway I am looking forward to CHRISTMAS, CHRISTMAS, CHRISTMAS (I like to live dangerously) as my parents are coming out (for thanksgiving too but don't give a flyin fig about that) and my dad gets more excited about CHRISTMAS than my two kids (when I was a kids me and my brother and sister actually locked him in his bedroom one CHRISTMAS eve, so he couldn't get us up too early)

That's a bugger
And short holidays, I know what you mean, where MIL works, they have a short holiday, and weirdly enough, also shortened the summer holidays by a couple days to get extra days in because they ran out of snow days last winter...it's not like winter is a one off thing, it does happen every year *lol*

Did you look at Flight Prices around this time. I always got screwed no matter how long in advance I booked. It might make you feel better.
Some advice. Used the saved money to buy loads of British Goodies from the UK and have them shipped. Do EVERYTHING British, (get UK Nova for the UK Christmas TV shows (crap but Christmassy), get your qaulity street, even persuade your UK friends to come over or invite your UK friends round.
I know it's second best, but it's what you make of it.
God bless.

Re: Not going home for Christmas (probably)
I'm probably the only one on here who feels like this, but what the heck. There's always one awkward one
I hate going back (I don't call it going home, it isn't my home any more, I live here).
Between in laws and out laws, our friends and family are spread all over England. If you visit one and not another, there's war and sulks about it. There isn't time to visit everyone we've ever known, so we have to juggle and I hate that.
Due to the US nazi holiday policy (ie you don't get any), we try to make trips back coincide with my OH's business trips to England. Since he goes to the SE, and all my family is in the NW, I either have to go to see them alone or not see them and just stay with my beloved.
I hate staying in other people's houses and imposing on them (no matter how much they insist it isn't an imposition and they love having me/us). Being a veggie is even harder when someone British is cooking for you than it is just living in America. For Christmas dinner, I usually get sprouts, potatoes and gravy.
I really, really hate flying. I hate the whole being on a plane for several hours thing (in economy at any rate) and I hate hanging around at airports.
We keep in close touch with family and friends via letters, email and phone calls. I'm not trying to avoid them. I do find the expectation they all have that I will want to see all of them as often as they would like an enormous burden.
And finally, I hate leaving my cat (and he hates me leaving him) just so I can go and do something I don't want to do in the first place.
Going "home". Bah, humbug
