Default New York Work for Tradesmen

I'm a 38 y/o carpenter/kitchen fitter from South London, basically, I've decided that if I don't get on with doing something about my dreams to live in the USA soon, then I will never do it at all. Now is the perfect time for me as I just split with the wife and am looking for a change in place to live and to meet new people.

Ideally I'd like to live and work in Manhattan, not sure how much work I could get as a kitchen fitter in New York City but I thought this would be a good place to meet some people that could give me some advice on how to get started. I'd be happy to start my own business and I could employ people pretty fast based on my recommendations so I don't see the USA government minding too much, its all about the American dream and all that.

Thanks for your advice all

I reckon you'll have no problem mate, just pack your old tools and get on a plane.

After all, it's just the same as the UK, no difference really.

You'll not need a visa in your occupation, New York is crying out for Carpenters, especially of the British variety.

Housing is cheap in Manhattan, I personally recommend you search on the Upper West Side of the park or perhaps downtown Manhattan, apartments usually start at around $500,000k

Whatever

There are basically SEVEN ways that you can get a visa to live and work in the US:
(1) Marriage (or engagement in anticipation of marriage) to a US citizen. My really ugly sister-in Law is available and very desperate..Returns are not accepted.

(2) You have skills that are in short supply in the US e.g. scientific or medical training. A degree is normally a must. Or you have superior specialist skills with at least 12 years experience.

(3) You have an Employer who is willing to transfer you - but even the employer has to make a good case for you - so you have to be a manager unless you fall under category (2) above.

(4)You may get a Green card in the diversity lottery (UK citizens, except N.Ireland are not eligible)

(5)You own or buy business (does not get you permanent resident status i.e. no green card)
The business must have a minimum value of around $100k (more the better) bearing in mind you will need somewhere to live and with any startup business you will need at least 2 years living money as back up. So a figure of $250k would be a nearer minimum

(6)You are an "investor" i.e. you have at least US$1m in assets to bring with you. And your background will be investigatedto the hilt.

(7)You have a close relative (mother, father, brother, sister and no further) who is an US citizen who would sponsor you, approx time this take 2-12 years…

Recruitment agent will not take you seriously if you are not already in the US. Writing for jobs is really a waste of time; likewise US employers have no idea what foreign qualification are or mean (except Degrees) it may pay you to get your qualification translated into a US equivalent, there are Companies that do this ..
But if you are getting a visa under (2) above then you need a job offer before you can get the visa. Your Employer will be your sponsor this will cost them upward of $3k. So you can see you have to be offering something really special to get considered
They also have to prove to the Dept of labor that there is no American who can do the job.

sounds like you've written all that before a couple of times,

so whatabout this, I'm not degree qualified, but I'm smart enough to get one I'm sure, anyway, now I'm split fromt he missus, the word is the oyster and all that, so I'm thinking, come to the USA, take a well needed break from work (but if I manage to get some work while I'm there, I wont turn it down for cash) I come back after a few months if it doesn't work out and I've not lost anything, if I meet asomeone or get a job, I can stay as long as they sponsr me.

Can anyone offer any information of places to stay on a semi-long term basis in New York for cheap rent (less then 500,000 please)

OK, understand something numbnuts, there is no such thing as "cheap" in New York, trust me.

You're on a fast track to deportation (if you even get in the country in the first place) if you try this. Be a good lad and do it right, or don't do it at all.

You'll have to come back after 3 months regardless.

If you get offered a job, you'll have to wait minimum of 6 or so months until the next allotment of H1b visa's are available.
And then no offense, but carpenters are ten a penny here, Why should they sponsor you when Bubba from South Carolina won't need to be sponsored and the employer won't have the expense.

I am sure my hubby would disagree with you on that

How goes it in your neck of the woods?... where exactly is your neck of the woods?

Back to the original post I think we have a wind up merchant... just my opinion.
