Default New Orleans at Easter - Advice Wanted

Hi chaps.

Just popped down from the frozen north to pick your brains.

My other half has got it into her head that she wants us to go to New Orleans for a few days at Easter. Neither of us knows anything about the place. I'm looking for tips, please, on:

where to stay (or not)
things to do
where to eat
etc

Cheers, Souv.

Go on a vampire tour - a walking tour of the streets with a real vampire who tells you the vampire stories.

Eat at Acme - great catfish poboys

Drink daiquiris at 10am

I can't remember where we stayed though... try looking on hotwire.com for good deals, and stay in the French quarter.

There are also a few places just outside the French Quarter (i.e. walkable) that may give you better bang for your buck. Business-oriented hotels (e.g. those in the Marriott, Hilton and Starwood families etc.) often give good rates during holidays such as Easter.

As always, would suggest reading reviews on tripadvisor.com before booking.

You can't got to New Orleans without hitting at least one of the Irish pubs.

All good stuff guys. Thanks.

It all looks a lot more appealing than shovelling snow every damn day for months on end.

Don't know if you like museums but the NOMA has a wonderful permanent collection. The gardens and grounds are to die for.

The National D-Day/WWII museum is there too. Yank oriented I'm sure, but you might find it interesting if you're into WWII stuff.

Also note that not all restaurants, pubs, hotels, etc. are up and operational as of yet. Some of them are still struggling from the aftermat of Katrina. The Garden District was 80% intact when I toured it last spring. April/May is a nice time to visit.

Stay in the French Quarter--there is no where else quite like it on Earth.

Stay in a unique hotel, not a cookiecutter chain. I like this place and have found others very similar: http://www.olivierhouse.com/ Converted Creole houses.

Take GOOD walking shoes and walk TONS.

If you go to the cemetaries around tour time you can listen in on enough to make it interesting.

DO take a mule carriage ride from Jackson Square. A good investment of $50 and a good show.

Do stay up way past your bedtime once or twice and enjoy the decadence of sleeping in way late, with a hangover.
Or, skip the booze and just enjoy a late brunch in the Quarter of gorgeous rich food you don't eat any other time.

Do the obligatory Cafe du Monde stop.

Walk the Garden district. Ride the streetcar. Go see as much live music as you can bear.

If you get rained out, try the Aquarium.. it's fantastic.
Be prepared to be rained on once or twice.

Have a GREAT time <sigh>

I've been there a few times, but the last trip was many years ago. I always stayed in or near the Quarter. Where to eat? The food is good just about everywhere. Coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde is traditional. At lunchtime pick a hole-in-the-wall po' boy shop. It used to be that many of the more well-known places didn't take reservations, so if you went at prime dinner time, you were in for a long wait. I don't know how much has changed post-Katrina. Have fun.
