Talking New Mexico Officials, Episode 627.

Take one guy with the following distinguished career in the NM State Police:

1. 1985 Internal Affairs (IA) report sustained "conduct unbecoming charges" - marijuana use, physical abuse, improper use of a weapon. Suspended 30 days and transferred.
2. Caution letter for "failure to perform duties of a supervisor".
3. Early 1990s. Investigated for using his position as a state police sergeant to have 25 officers dismiss or cancel traffic tickets in order to help his wife's election campaign (Rep. Debbie Rodella, D-San Juan Pueblo)
4. 1993 IA sustained allegation of using his position for personal gain. 30 day suspension.
5. 1993. 30 day suspension for shooting a deer decoy used by game officers to catch poachers on the Jicarilla Apache Nation.
6. 1994 IA sustained allegations of conduct unbecoming an officer - abuse of sick leave, falsifying official reports.
7. 1996, 1998, 2000. Complaints lodged concerning his "assistance of voters" in Espanola.

Wow! What do you do with a guy like this? Easy, make him a Rio Arriba County Magistrate (Gov. Bill Richardson, March 2005).

What does such a fine citizen do with his new position? Drives 1.5 hours to spring his buddy from jail (after said buddy's DWI arrest).

Resigns. (At the request of Gov. Bill Richardson, July 2005.) Says he is proud to have served the community in that role.

It's New Mexico. There will be many more to come.
