New BBC iPlayer: A Question

Does anyone know how to download the new BBC iplayer? They launched a new iplayer and I can't seem to download it. I use a specific VPN to watch but still can't seem to download?

Finally figured it out. Was able to see new iPlayer and gave it a test run  like the new look

Re: New BBC iPlayer: A Question

My Smart DNS is still working OK, and I download iPlayer and it goes to the new site.

Contact whoever you get the VPN from and tell them.

It works now. Used an antiquated way to get it but got it none the less. Thanks for the advise
It is not the same as the app as I am still unable to download the new app

I never could download the iPad app, but I did download the new desktop program to my PC.

Yeah I have it on my MacBook Air but only have the app on my iPad. Can't even remember now how I got it as it has been so long but as long as I watch I'm not going to complain too much

Re: New BBC iPlayer: A Question

You can only download the iPlayer app from the UK App Store I believe. You'd have to set up a UK based Apple ID to use the UK App Store.

Which is easy to do and doesn't need a credit card.

For Android, it's just easier to google the APK than to set up a UK account.

Would you care to explain how. :)

Re: New BBC iPlayer: A Question

I did this a couple of weeks ago to update my sky go app.
There may be an easier way, but this is how I did it.
First of all, change your App Store to the UK one. Go to SETTINGS then ITUNES AND APP STORE click on your Apple ID, choose VIEW APPLE ID then choose COUNTRY/REGION and change it to UK.
Next log out of your Apple ID on your device.
Go into the UK App Store that should now be available.
Click on any app that is free to download it. You should be prompted to either log in or create a new ID. Simply create an ID and when you get to the bit where it asks you for a credit card simply pick none or not at this time or whatever the exact wording is.
You will need to enter a UK address, and you will need an email address you've previously not used.
That probably sounds complicated, but it really isn't.

Cheers, thought you needed a credit card but I'll give that a go.

Is this for tv as well as radio?

Yes it is for TV as well, but for the TV to work you need to have a VPN connection or DNS server so that your device has a UK ip address.

Do it on the desktop.

Create new iTunes account, using the UK as the region.

There's a option to not include a credit card.

You do need to get a free app to complete creating the profile, which is handy that the iPlayer is free.

Then on the iPad, go to settings, log out of your iTunes account and log into the UK one, then go to app store and download purchases and there it appears.

Log out, log into regular iTunes and you're sorted.

Though while in the UK iTunes, might as well get ITV and any other UK specific stuff you can think of.

Re: New BBC iPlayer: A Question

Another option, and "free", is to have a friend or family member in the UK (with a decent broadband/HSI connection) host a VPN for you.
All you need to do is purchase a Raspberry Pi (around $40 max) and spend about an hour configuring it. Then leave it in their network and access it remotely, no other fees would be needed.

How-to guide here

On iTunes on my desktop there doesn't appear to be an option not to use a credit card. It lets me change to UK but requires a credit card.

I can't do it on the iPad as I have a Cloud Subscription and it requires me to cancel that before I can change country. Cancelling is not an option as I have a lot of City stuff stored in the Cloud account.

Unless a update removed the option for "None", it should be on the right of all the payment options.

It would seem crazy that you can set up a credit card free account from an iPad, but not from iTunes.

Thanks that link explained where I was going wrong. Just creating a new account doesn't bring up the no credit card option, I need to click on the free app first.

You can, but I think doing it from the device, you're cancelling services first, which you don't when doing it from iTunes, which means you can then log out and in on the device without any issues.

Which for Lansbury was the main issue due to cloud services.

So do you guys watch stuff on your ipad etc??

I tend to download programs so I can burn them to DVD or transfer to a USB stick to watch on the main system.

I watch a tonne of stuff on my ipad. I download a lot of stuff on the iPlayer and 4OD (ITV and 5 don't have a download facility yet) and either watch stuff straight on my ipad or hook the tv up to the ipad and watch it there. I do the same with FilmOn if I want to watch stuff live.

I watch most things on my ipad. I do get HD . For surround sound or close to it I recently purchased Bose SL III. Sounds great and works via Bluetooth. Anything the ipad plays once connected plays through Bose

On my laptop (Macbook Air) updated itself when I tested it a few minutes ago, so don't have to do anything on laptop. I might try it for my iPad. Gonna give it a go and see if I'm successful

When you download via the iPlayer, you get the choice of normal or high quality downloads. If you choose high quality, I believe it's HD. I only have a sound bar so not sure on the cup surround sound. Also should have mentioned that the 4OD app doesn't work with the video out function on the ipad, so you'd have to watch any channel 4 downloads actually on the ipad.

There is also an app called tv catchup that will likely work

Doesn't work with a VPN.

The Apple TV gadget works pretty well for wirelessly streaming from your ipad to the tv ($75 refurbished from the apple store online). Also, it does pretty much the same stuff as a Roku I think, but only worth getting Apple TV if you have an ipad and regularly want to connect it to the tv as it mirrors what's on the ipad to the tv (so good for photo slideshows too, etc). By the way thanks for the info on accessing the BBC iplayer app. I use a DNS but still hadn't been able to get the iplayer app so just watch stuff straight from the BBC website. So if you download a program is it actually saved to the ipad? Where do you go on the ipad to find the show and start playback?

You play it back from the app, in much the same way as you would with the iPlayer desktop app on a PC.

OK, so kind of like adding a film to a Netflix queue. It's not actually on your device.

No, it's downloaded, but you play it through the app. It just takes care of any buffering issues.

OK, so I don't need to be connected to the web to play it back. So could download stuff to watch on a plane, for example?
