Myrtle Beach sc
Hi guys,
I have been offered a job in Myrtle beach. I was there this weekend for an interview, the place seemed nice. I would like to know if anyone lives there? I need advice on where to live, where to avoid, what it is really like living rather than visiting there. Thanks

Thanks, I have been told about the events and how busy it gets during summer. I am happy to commute a little. What other towns would you recommend?

Redneck Riviera is a very good description! I personally love it, I would like to live there one day but I can see it wouldn't be to everyone's taste. Are there even any big companies around there? I imagine it's pretty dead in winter.

Myrtle Beach is basically our holiday home, we go there every year at least twice and fully intend to move there (the area) in a few years.
I would suggest you speak to the locals about commuting, we are looking at Conway, which is about half an hour back from MB during the off-season, but during the peak is more like 2 hours. Traffic is mad.
It's still busy in winter, since the prices are far more reasonable for hotels etc, but as mentioned about driving times it's not really any comparison. Do you have kids? You would need to consider things to do during off seasons, since most attractions close down and there is very little to do for residents.
Everything there is expensive all year around, consider the risk of a hurricane strike, all the usual problems with living right on the east coast, 2 feet of sea level rise and the place wouldn't exist anymore!
Pulaski is right about bike weeks, they get a little 'sporty'
Depends what you mean by big really. Boeings new plant is just over an hour away, well within commuting distance if you didn't want to live in Charleston.

Re: Myrtle Beach sc
Thanks for the input. Honestly i am on day 3 of being unemployed and its killing me. This is the only option on the table. So I have to take it. Traffic rednecks and whatever else I think I can handle. Thanks for the input. I have no real interest in the beach so wont be dealing with the crowds too much except maybe when my wife and I want to go out to dinner. The prices seem to be on par with northern Virginia where I am now. Does anyone know if there is a Brit community there? I saw they have a pub?

Ive been to the pub, it's run by a second generation Irish family. Haven't ever met any Brits though.

I would liken it to Blackpool, visited when we were on vacation at Pauley's Island. I am sure there must be some lovely places around there though.

A job is a job. I would rather work in blackpool or myrtle beach than sign up for any assistance. I think the attitude of receiving something for free when your capable of working is what made a lot of us come here. If you can't find a job in your town you move. Its that simple.

Hi there
I live in Longs, which is right next to Little River, about 30 mins away from MB.
I think on the whole it is a nice area. I have been here nearly 8 years. The weather is great on the whole and consistent (except for the rainfall this year).
The beaches are nice.
Sure its a bit red-necky, but you will find most people pleasant. Being British, most will take a liking to you. Its comparatively cheap.
I agree with the other user, I would live just outside MB.....away from 501 - which is crazy busy come summertime, as is 17, particularly in NMB and MB.
31 is a great road to get used to.
I found the British Pub, which is near to Market Commons (a somewhat upmarket for tourists section of housing/shops/restaurants) to be pretty good - they even have crisps.
There is also a shop next to Target (World Market) which sells British goodies. $$$ but available.
Housing is a pretty good value too.
If you have any more questions PM me
take care and good luck

Bob I am the most liberal person in the world politically, and I understand your point. But hopefully you understand mine. I am fully able to work and am willing to do or go wherever I have to to support my family. While unemployment might be earned or deserved, I think most of us would take a job anyday.

Re: Myrtle Beach sc
My wife works there every other week and suggests Plantation Point and anywhere on South 17, starting at Market Commons.
The pub is still going at Market Commons.
The bike weeks are split roughly between Harley week and the Rice Burner week.
Senior college week is busy but fun and senior high school week may have lots of drunken teens vomiting everywhere.
Winter the "Snow Birds" come lots of Canadians.
