Certainly easier to open an offshore account (from most reports, even if its not law, the onshore banks shun non-residents opening new accounts) but most of the offshore banks seem to have a statement to the effect that deposits don't carry the same protection as onshore accounts as they are not covered by the most recent UK financial services compensation

That may well be true, however the risk is quite low if you invest with a "too large to fail" British clearing bank's branch or subsidiary.

sure, I was just pointing out that while the logos etc look the same, the terms of business are quite different..
