Re: MY SON IS DEAF
Hi Josie,
Your situation really depends on where you'll be living..... I would take your time doing research on the area you're going to be living in. We live in Naperville which is a suburb about 35 miles west of Chicago.... we chose this location for 2 reasons... the trains and the schools.
My son came home last week with 2 books given to them about deaf children and cochlear implants... there are apparently 2 deaf children in his class of 21 and they brought in a specialist to talk to the kids and explain to them, because at 6 curiosity and cruelness can sometimes be interchanged.
Our six year old came home and said MOM a girl in my class has RADIO EARS It's very cool!
The school district we're in is very big on keeping the kids in the classroom as much as possible and having the specialists they need work with them in their own room and not having them pulled out too much! Which is fantastic!
Good luck in your journey!

Re: MY SON IS DEAF
Hi Josie
we were living in Texas almost four years ago with our two children. My daughter Challis was born prem and as a result is profoundly deaf. she is amazing and has two hearing aids and has no hearing below a jumo jet. (most people never realise as she has no speach impairment)
When we first arrived we thought that the best place would be the Texas school for the deaf, however once we visited we found that this was more of an insitution than a school. We were very worried about what would lie head for in her terms of schooling and wrongly so..... The school that my son attended Lake Pointe elementry was amazing and included all children including blind. (my son aged 8 had atteneded private school all his life and was very bright this school was on an equal par to all his private education) To see a child being schooled in using a cane arond the school was amazing in wasn't done in front of anyone or behind closed doors but we just happened to be popping in to the school for an appointment at the time. Children who were on thier way to class did not stop and stare it was part of the norm just another kid being taught somthing different...
We knew that Challis would be the same a few extra lessons in things that she couldn't do but the same inclusion. Unfortunatly for us we had t return to the U.K because of our job's and 7/7. We are however now returning to the states in the next twelve months but this time to Florida due to work. When we returned to the U.K. there were no schools for our children andso they had to go on a wait list in the end they went private because private my dauher gets less than anyone in a state school no teacher for the deaf no loop sytem. So you may have to pay a little bit in the states but there certinaly isn't the stigma that is attached here in the schools.
As for Hearing aids there are insurance policies that you can take out that are worth it we lost two on baseball fields but paid around an excess of $100
if you need more info let me know.
Good Luck it can sem a little frightening but there are people out here who have been there before willing to help
