Can anyone recommend a shipping company for personal possessions from the UK to the USA please?

How much. A few boxes, a 40ft container or somewhere in between. Makes a difference.

Circa 100 cubic feet of gear (2.85 cubic metres from memory). Lots of boxes but some packing will be required.

I have just started dealings with Pickfords, after having read the Wiki on this forum and seeing a lot of recommendations. Definitely look at this, it was invaluable for me: Shipping Via Airfreight : British Expat Wiki
I echo lansbury in that what/how much you're shipping should very much dictate the company/shipping options you work with, so shop around. Pickfords might be a good place to start, though - they have been extremely knowledgeable, accommodating and reassuring to me so far, and can move everything from mirrors to cats!
Good luck!

There's a couple of occasions I have needed to ship a few boxes - probably comparable to what you have to ship, and I just looked up a local freight forwarded in yellow pages or on-line (just Google <Your Town freight forwarder>).
They'll work with whatever your instructions are - so I requested pick up from an address in the UK (I didn't need to be there for the pick up), delivery to an airport in the US. On one occasion an agent did the customs paperwork, the other time I did the customs clearance myself and picked up my stuff from the bonded warehouse.
