Moving to New Jersey/New york with a teenager and dog!!!!!!!
Hi,
Next year I am planning to move to New York or New Jersey for a year or 2. My daughter will have finished school so is happy to carry on at an american school, does anyone have any info on schools etc. for 16 yr olds and any info on the best place to move to? We would like a nice town that is easy to get into the city.
If anyone has any info on renting ie. how easy or hard it is and what the procedure is that would be great
Also if anyone has any info on bringing a dog over that would be good.
Cheers
Mel

How precisely are you planning to move for a year or two? US immigration is not as flexible as you seem to think it is.
Before you waste your and other's time, sort out the visa, first.

Unless you're a USC, http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Pulask...ork_in_the_USA is the place to start.
If you've got a visa route, then search out past threads on NY and NJ, plenty of them...but where to live would probably depend on where you work and what kind of commute you want to put up with.
A kid at 16, unless they plan on going to a US university, would be better off staying in the UK as they need 3 years residence in the UK to get UK rates at time of enrollment and international rates may or may not be very expensive, depending on the uni and the type of course.
As for renting, plenty of threads covering that subject too, and search out credit history/score as they're kind of related. The pet subject has also come up a lot, a couple of threads from a few weeks ago have a lot of info.

But assuming that you can, are your company happy to spend thousands on your visa application for you to go for just a year? Don't mean to be negative, but it's a big ask of them.

Welcome to BE and congrats on your new job. I bet you are both excited about moving over to the US.
You write that you are only planning on staying a couple of years? Had your daughter given any thought to her plans after 18, is she planning on attending university in the UK? Or maybe if you are staying longer than 2 years does she have plans to attend American college?

Can you get an H1B for a document controller? Wouldn't have thought so, but could be wrong - just didn't realise you needed a degree to do it and it's considered a 'specialist' occupation.

I will actually be a design manager in the next few weeks so that is the position I will be taking over in the states, however either of the visas suit me so there will be no problem there. But before I go ahead with that its the living etc. that I wanted info about, ie nicest places to live (commuting not a problem) I guess my best bet is living nearest to the school my daughter gets into etc.

Stuyvesant High School is in the neighborhood.

So do you have a degree or 12 years experience in that field of work? Isn't that a requirement for a H1B? If it is the same company would they be able to get you on a L intra company transfer visa? (assuming of course you have worked for them for at least 12 months already)

My OH got a H1B and it was luckily pretty straight forward. Bof luck with whichever visa you get.
