UKForex give as good or better rates than XETrade, and can verify you without you having to send reams of paperwork to them.

Go and look at xe.com/fx for the info.

There are better exchange rates, and no fees with XE Trade. Much cheaper and (after initial setup hassle) easier to do trades in a few secs online than dealing with the banks at each end imho.

Although its worth noting you are still restricted to what your bank is willing to transfer. Barclays for example have a £5000 limit on online transfers - this used to be only £1000. So if you want to transfer more then this you still have to go into the bank.

Indeed....we're with Barclays, so gonna have to go into the branch to transfer the bulk of the cash.

It's a good idea really.....lest someone gets your online banking credentials and clears you out!

Yep, I appreciate the security, but its a pain when you are not in the country and need to transfer money.

In my opinion, Barclays are turning into something of a joke. Capping daily fund transfers and making people carry that ridiculous "calculator" to check their account is annoying and inconvenient (secure, yes, - but overkill).

I'd consider switching banks before you depart; once you are away and you can't pop in, it might be problematic.

We'll only be leaving a few grand in the Barclays account....just enough to use for ATM withdrawls and to pay of UK credit cards for a month or two while we get set up in the US.

No you don't - you just transfer it in several chunks! :)

Well yes, but when there are particularly large sums its a pain doing it every day for weeks on end - and it can prove costly. I found this when I sold my house and although I can't complain too much about the exchange rate, the first few days I got about $2.05, but by the end it was well below $2 - this works out as a fair bit of money.

Edit: Also I would imagine transferring £5000 every day for ages would give you a good chance of being flagged as suspicious.
